Can anyone recommend a thermostat that does not require a power supply and
can switch a 12v heater?

Hi Neil

I would suggest a thermostat from a fridge as it uses a file to sense the
temperature and does not require any electrical current to operate. The cool
stores or fridge's without an ice box would be better as it would have a
higher range. It all depends on what temp you are looking to maintain.
If you want to contact a manufacture try Danfoss as they make all sorts for
everyone.

Hope it helps

Dave

Screwfix do a similar one that runs on batteries and it can change the
settings throughout the day to allow the temperature to rise or fall at
different times.

What sort of heater? Remember the Eberspacher types take a heavy load on
start up, much more than a conventional central heating thermostat is rated
for.

I do not think that the thermostat for an Eberspacher is fitted in the main
power lead.

There are many option ... what you need is an adjustable simple bimetal
strip .... these can be found for switching aquarium heaters, home
brew tanks, PCB etch tanks etc ... I would imagine MAPLIn etc. would
have what you want.

Alternativly get a standard home heating system Frost stat ...
Honeywell for example, you set the temp it switches at .

the contacs are just that ... contacts so can use on 12V with no
problem.
Just watch the current though as they are only designed for pumps or
M.valves.
