Stressful family get-togethers aren't restricted to Christmas
gatherings.
Scores of books, films, etc are created each year, (most of them
humorous, as my post was intended to be), capitalizing on the tension
that often surfaces at such events. Few families aren't at least
slightly dysfunctional, and the popularity of shows like "The
Simpsons", etc is partially based upon the fact that (as hard as it is
to admit) we can all see something of ourselves or somebody we know
very well in the characters represented. >> Stay informed about: I am surprised no one wished us............. |

If I had your attitude towards Christmas, I'd think of it as little as
possible. If and when you celebrated Christmas, was it a 'contentious' time
for your family?

BTW, Chuck, have you ever thought of devoting some of your historical
research abilities to Islam celebrations?

Venerated or decorated trees and shrubs are recent inclusions in the
Christian celebration. They have been a part of Germanic solstice
celebrations for thousands of years, but only became "Christmas trees"
in the 19th Century. Placing offerings (gifts) around an evergreen
altar is not an essentially and certainly not an exclusively Christian
practice. "Merry Christmas" is an appropriate greeting or sentiment
for
people who you know are going to be celebrating Christmas. It can also
be used by people who dismiss any other holiday celebration or
religious tradition as less worthy than their own and don't care
whether or not they might offend somebody.
Would you be slightly uncomfortable if a co-worker continuously
insisted on wishing you a blessed Shabbat every Saturday night,
expressed his best wishes for your family's celebration of Rosh
Chodesh Sivan, or insisted that the primary holiday in the month of
March was the feast of Purim? You *might* say, "Good grief! Doesn't
David realize that everybody isn't Jewish? What makes him think that
I'm Jewish, or celebrate Jewish holidays? Why doesn't he know that I'm
Christian, or at least care enough to consider the possibility?"
Your holiday is Christmas. Enjoy it. Celebrate it. But don't impose it
upon those who celebrate something else or those who celebrate nothing
at all. It was entirely appropriate for the network to show a
collection of brightly colored glass balls and wish the audience
"Happy Holidays". Christmas trees, (like flying reindeer, magic elves
making toys at the North Pole, and unrestrained shopping sprees) are
part of a secular celebration of the solstice holiday. Let's hope that
nobody's religious sensibilities are offended by folks who express a
disbelief in Santa Claus.
I attended a local candle-light ceremony that began at 11PM on the
24th. There wasn't much "preaching" involved, but in a short message
the worship leader made a wise observation. His comment can be
characterized as; "The assault on religious freedom today has little
to do with whether people wish each other Happy Holidays or Merry
Christmas. That's a non-issue. Christians should be more concerned
with whether or not their personal lives reflect the principles and
values taught by Jesus than with wasting time keeping track of who is
and who isn't using the greeting 'Merry Christmas' during the month of
December." The worship leader was quite likely right, IMO.
Merry "extended" Christmas, John. (You celebrate Christmas, so the
greeting is entirely appropriate). >> Stay informed about: I am surprised no one wished us............. |

Chuck, I keep waiting for your post telling how joyous and fulfilling the
Christmas season can be.
Yesterday, NBC during it's breaks, was showing a picture of Christmas tree
balls and decorations in a background, with the words, "Happy Holiday" in
the foreground.
I sent them an email asking if they were too stupid to realize that the
'holiday' (or Holy Day) in question was *Christmas* day.

Chuck, what other major holiday is celebrated on 25 December? If you'll go
read my post you'll see I was referring to only one (1) day.
Christmas trees are part of Christmas, hence the name. Perhaps you'd like
the name changed to holiday tree, but if it says 'Christmas', then it's
Christmas.
Any idea why the secular progressives, or just 'seculars' don't pick a day
in July and call it "Gift Giving Day". Maybe they could have "Lighted Gift
Giving Day Boat Parades".
Then there wouldn't be any hassle.
As to your question re: coworkers - no, I wouldn't be offended at a
coworker wishing me well in whatever words he wishes. If he was purposely
trying to offend me, I would inform him of my displeasure.
