Archived from groups: can>rec>boating (more info?)

I'm in Ottawa. I trailer to the 1000 Islands maybe seven, eight times a
season, take the occasional afternoon off and boat between here and Fitzroy
on the Ottawa River, go up and down the Ridea between Manotick and the 1st
set of locks a few times, and go up to White Lake maybe two, three times a
season. I trailer an 18' I/O so I require a solid launch ramp. What spots in
the are would you guys suggest?

Thanks

OT: Geez ... when is the City gonna clean up that frikken mess they made of
the ramp out by the NPS? Not a problem for me and my jeep, but one poor guy
got stranded there up to the floor boards in the gravel on wednesday when I
was coming in for the day ... he had a tow on the way (and without tow
points that we could see on the car, I could have made matters worse).

Go to boatingincanada.com/rideau.html and look for a link to boat launch
ramps in eastern Ont.

I did a little searching for you (and myself, as I have not done either the
Upper or Lower Ottawa, but have been told it's worth the visit).

- The Ottawa from Ottawa east (put in at Rockcliffe or Rockland). See "Some
Additional Information on
Cruising the Lower Ottawa River." at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://sailquest.com/ottawa/downrvr.htm" target="_blank">http://sailquest.com/ottawa/downrvr.htm</a>
- The Ottawa west of Arnprior <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.temiskawa.com/homepage.html" target="_blank">http://www.temiskawa.com/homepage.html</a>
- Golden Lake is a big lake and within striking distance.
- Big Rideau Lake will keep you busy for a day of cruising/exploring.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.rideau-info.com/" target="_blank">http://www.rideau-info.com/</a>
- Sharbot Lake is another.

Boat ramps are at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.geocities.com/ottawaboatramps/" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/ottawaboatramps/</a>

And talking about ramps...at least the NSC or City isn't charging ramp fees
while the thing is under the weather. Frickin Manotick (at the swimming
pool) is charging $8 and the ramp is total crap, and the dockage is a
hazard. What the hell are they doing with the money? It sure isn't going
towards improvements, as I've seen very little in the past five years. They
replaced a couple of dock boards, but that probably only took a whopping 100
bucks.

Been to that site ... thanks ... but I'd like to hear about the waters
themselves. Speaking of ramps, I found an exceptional free concrete ramp
(and dock) into the Bonnechere (sp) river where it meets the Ottawa River up
past Arnprior. A sunday afternoon and only one truck and trailer in the lot.

Thanks for the links Grant.

About the Manotick "ramp" ... I think we agree, there is no ramp per se ...
just well packed sand, mud gravel ... but I can launch there easily and find
it just fine. As for the $8 ... last year anyway, and for what it's worth,
once you launched 5 times and showed receipts the rest of the year was free
and the fee is charged only during july-august. I view the $8 as fair
payment to park my jeep and trailer in a relatively secure location while
I'm out for the day. That to me is the other side of trailering ... will my
jeep and/or trailer be there when I get back? So far, all l've lost is the
trailer plate ... $20 to relace.

We enjoy a cruise on the Rideau now and then launching at Manotick. It's
about 26 miles up to the 1st set of locks with an excellent dock ... and a
most excellent little family run restaurant.

There is a marina a little ways upriver that charges $15 day with a concrete
ramp ... and there's a free concrete ramp at Kars (?).

I've yet to explore Charleston Lake. But the ramp and parking at I guess
it's the north end (my map's out in the jeep) in Charleston looks excellent
.... and free. Any info on Charleston lake? Thanks.
