Me and my wife are 175 and 130 lbs, respectively. We used to do a lot
of high-altitude backpacking, thus, we are used to traveling light
(say, ~30 lb packs for a 7 day trip?). Most of standard canoes we've
tried - Wenonah Minnesota II, Spirit II, Aurora look more like SUVs.
But we are looking for a Smart Car analogue in canoes, if you know
what I mean Smile - so that we could portage it easily, and afford a
better material for the same cost. In addition, solo-friendliness
would be a plus which I guess it easier to implement in a narrow
canoe. Also, looking for a streamlined design to cross open water
faster. I was considering the Solo Plus by Wenonah... but I think it's
still too wide.. I found out about Wee Lassie design canoes - is it
realistic to find a tandem analog of those? Thanks!

For light weight try a skin-on-frame canoe such as the late Platt
Monfort's designs at www.gaboats.com.

For open water canoeing you're going to need volume in the ends to
lift over waves. For speed what you want is a kayak. Canoes carry more
but if you are "backpacking" a tandem kayak should be fine. Kevlar is
the material of choice for lightweight, although more expensive,
paddling boats.

I all depends on what you want to do. We used a Minnesota II to paddle
the Mississippi River and thought it was about perfect for our needs.
Canoes will almost always default to being wider than a kayak, but
they also have some other benefits for tripping (ease of entry/exit,
access to gear, etc). For open water crossings in rough conditions, a
double sea kayak may be what you're looking for.
