shortening thru hulls - follow up

Hi folks,

I asked about how you could cut a bronze thru hull to reduce the
amount of blocking required inside the hull.

Angle grinder with cut off wheel worked very smoothly (I use a grinder
a lot and do have a smooth touch). Super easy to back off the nut.
The threads didn't really even need cleaning up with a file.

Saved a whole 1 lb with three thru hulls being shorter Smile

I've got a mate with a Prout that has already removed his gen-set and
is now talking about much the electrical pump weighs as apposed to
foot pumps.

I tell him that to really lighten it, take out the motor.

shortening enscapulated keel - Has anyone any experience shortening a fiberglass enscapulated keel that's packed with lead pellets.. I've seen posts that it's been done with solid lead, but nothing about a keel of this type. Thinking I could mold a lead bulb to add the weight back..

shortening thru hull fittings? - I've got to put in some new thru hulls and of course the stem length of the fitting is about 3" long. The hull is ~3/4" thick, the portion that sits in the seacock is perhaps 1" which leaves 1-1/4" or so to be made up with backing...

Follow up to Head Posting ... - Ok,, after all the very good advice and info, along with some internet research, I have decided to take the old head out at least for the time being. I have way too many more important projects for spring. I did some searching and found two or three....

Through-hulls and Seacocks - I have been changing the sanitation hoses on my boat, and I found that the discharge seacock didn't have a ball in it(or any other means to stop the flow of water). I did a bit of research and found out that my so called seacock is in fact just a ball..

cored hulls - Any opinions out there on the use of coring on a power boat hull? balsa or foam ? I am looking at purchasing a 33 ft Carver that has a baltec cored hull , the boat is mint but I am concerned about this type of construction. Any advise or stories ..
