Kinda short notice, but I am looking for someplace to paddle next weekend in
south western Virginia/West Virginia area. I am meeting up with an old
friend and I am hoping to find a river that would be good for an overnighter
with some mild whitewater (I-III). Scenery and camping are more important
than adrenalin for this trip. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

pat

Check into the New River, possibly putting in below the dam at
Fries. Paddling way above, such as South Fork of New in NC, is a
possibility. Some nice rapids in the next 5 miles below Fries, the
"Double Shoals" section. Possibility of camping somewhere around the
lake above Byllesby dam, with nasty little portage on left there.
Continue on to Buck dam, maybe on past that. This section of the
river is between I-77 and rt. 94. There used to be a RR along there,
now gone, and Virginia has been working on establishing a linear park
and trail along there. I haven't seen it in several years, so don't
know if new facilities have been added. Tom McCloud

The New river in WVa would fit your bill quite nicely. It has some
real nice class I-III sections. Me and 2 buds did a 4 day trip with 2
nights at one spot this past fall (Oct). While we didn't have great
weather and we took out a day early because of rain and rising levels,
the scenery was absolutly beautiful, sSpecially since we caught the
fall colors at their peak. I set up a site with a slide show from the
trip at:

I believe we put in at Sandstone but I really don't remember. If
you're interested I can look it up on my maps.

Thanks Tom and Pepe,

The New does look like it is just what I am looking for! Very nice
pics and a fall trip on the New definitely might be in the works as
well.
