Hi,

I have a '96 Jet Ski JH1100. After sitting unused for several
months it will not start...the starter will make a whirring
sound but not turn over. I was told it's a problem with the
bendix in the starter, and that the engine will need to be
pulled in order to get it out. I ordered a Seloc manual for it,
and that should help a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions
or advice they'd want to share about pulling the engine or anything?

Thanks!

I don't know your motor but they told me my engine had to be pulled as
well to change my starter on my 760 GX... I found that on mine, if I
pulled the exaust manifold, i had enough room to get to the starter...
SO for a $10 gasket, I saved pulling the motor. If this is NOT the
case... be VERY sensitive to the washers and spacers and then make sure
you realign the engine after you put it back in.

You do not have to pull the motor on that ski to remove the starter.
You just have to disconnect a few exhaust components to get at it. And
you might not even really have to do that. The starter is located
under the exhaust manifold. I removed mine before pulling my motor a
few weeks back as a matter of course in getting the motor out. At the
time, I had large exhaust chamber thing disconnected and lying against
the side of the ski (no way to remove with motor in that I can see) and
I think I had the top curved exhaust pipe out as well. The exhaust
manifold was still bolted in, though. If you're going in specifically
for the starter, you might not have to disconnect anything. That's
just what I had disconnected at the time. This was on a '00 JH1100,
but I'm fairly certain the '96 is nearly identical.

Reach around and under the exhaust manifold, coming in from the rear of
the engine area and see if you can feel your way around the starter.
You might get lucky.
