I have a 1999 sea-doo GTX LTD which takes a long time (1-3) minutes to
start.
I think it's me not knowing how to properly start it.
Can someone help?

I've been pressing the throttle, opening the choke (somewhat), and
depressing the start button. There's no specific order for the above;
I just do it until it starts.

What's the proper way?

Thanks.

When cold...

Pull the choke all the way out and hold it there

Press the starter button until it kicks
Release the choke
Slightly open the throttle
Press the starter again until it starts
On rare occasions yo might need to pull the choke again

I have the same boat and it rarely takes more than 30 seconds to start

After it is started just idle around for a minute or two or three to
let it warm up, accelerate slowly until you are sure the motor is
fully warm, depending on conditions that might be the first five
minutes or so... VERY IMPORTANT to let the motor warm up fully!

If it is taking yo longer than that, it may be that your choke is not
fully enguaging and may need adjustment...

Hope it helps~!

Get the Prok filter and jetting kit from Watercraft Magic and you won't have
to beg the machine to start anymore.

I ditto Bills kit will help. The 99 GTX should have the same 951 with
accelerator pumps as my 98 XP-L.
Start it out of the water first. Make sure you have turned the Gas valve
to ON for a minute before you start or you are just wasting your
battery? Takes time for the fuel to get to the carbs. Hit the throttle
once to pump a little fuel from the acclerator pumps into the carbs.
Then pull the choke and turn over for about 5 seconds. If it does not
start repeat the above process.Once it starts Rev it Once and shut it
off and put it in the water. Run it as little as possible out of the
water. Some people start it a Rev it and Rev it Like almost a minute in
the parking lt which creates a bad image for us jetskiers and does not
help the Poor Motor! Sarge 707

Pull the choke out, give it full throttle while depressing the start button
till it starts.

Laszlo,

The choke is spring loaded, so I'd need to hold it. I'd need three hands?
I.e., (1) pull choke and (2) throttle and (3) depressing start button at the same
time?

THanks,
Liem

Trau,

Since you have an accellerator pump on the carb, start your ski in this
manner.
Pull back on the throttle 2-3 times. This will feed some fuel down the
throat of the carb.
Pull out on the choke knob FULLY.
Depress the starter button. Do not open the throttle until it starts to
pop.
If it does not start after 10 seconds, stop. Pump the throttle a couple
of more times, pull out the choke and try starting again.

Thank you all for the helpful hints; I will try these out.

Funny that the Seadoo manual does not mention anything about the throttle
for the GTX except depressing the starter button.

Thanks.

Yes Pump the throttle 2-3 times before you even try to start, use
chock.

BUT!!!!

You want to check your fuel lines, If they were GRAY and turned TAN,
and have a TEMPO 8710 Number you need to replace them FAST!, and
rebuild your carbs.

you can get more info at www.sea-doo.net

I used to have to trap the choke open with the float cushion on my lanyard
while giving it gas. Then when it fired pull the lanyard loose. But like I
said previously, Watercraft Magic kit took care of hard starting.

I say don't hold the throttle wide open. Just open it barely if at all
in case your idle is too low. Holding the throttle wide open defeats
the purpose of the choke, which is to "choke off the air" and suck
more fuel into the carb and intake manifold. The longer the ski sits
(days, weeks) with fuel draining out of the fuel lines, the longer you
have to choke it. You can also put a short piece of clear fuel line
before the carb so you can see if the carb is getting fuel.

Wrong. Holding the throttle wide open creates more suction on the
orifices from which the fuel flows thereby getting the fuel to the plugs
faster.
