Post subject: Question from a newbie about flooded engine
Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

Hi,

I rented a SeaDoo (don't remember exactly which one, but I think is is
a 9XX series) last weekend. While in water, a wave tipped the jetski
over and in a couple of minutes, I turned the ski over to the correct
position. But by then water had got into the Jetski and so it remained
tilted to one side (partially sunk). The rental guys came by in 10
minutes and we towed the ski to their place. I did not start the JetSki
once it had flipped over.

At shore, he showed me that water had gone into the engine compartment
(he removed the spark plug and cranked the engine to let a jet stream
of water out) and told me that he has to take it to the shop which was
closed for the next two days. He wanted me to pay 500$ for loss of
business for the next two days and the repair cost as quoted by the
shop.

Reading on this newsgroup and also as per information available on
www.sea-doo.com, a flooded engine can be rectified by removing the
spark plugs and cranking the engine several times to let the water out.

Was he taking advantage of me by telling me about the 2 day loss of
business ? In your experience how much time and money does it cost to
fix a sea-doo jetski whose engine has been partially flodded (Given
that the ski was not started at all with water in the engine
compartment and thereby ruling out a hydro lock).

Thanks
Savsya

Was there anything in the rental contract to make you responsible for what
happened? Just say it was "an act of God" which made a BIG wave tip it over.

The more time they waited to start it, the more likely the motor's junk.
the rental guys should have put the plugs back in and started it, and ran it
water is in with the crank, and needs to be forced out
get a copy of the owners manual and a lawyer.
don't play games with these guys sounds like a scam.

cost for repair will be over $2000

I am not sure If I can dispute the charges now. Since this was at a
place I was visiting and the rental guys were telling me that they will
have to take it a shop (and shops were closed for the weekend), I
expected that I will have to pay the 240$ per day business loss as per
rental contract and also the charge for getting it repaired in shop. As
a settlement I paid him 600$ by credit card and he wrote on the rental
agreement that "the charge was for 240$ per day for 2 days & water
damage" and also that "no further liabilities will be sought from me".

After reading your replies, it looks like he just chetaed me of about
some $$$.

I tried contacting them after I got back home just to argue my case and
see if he reduces the amount. They have never called me back. I could
contact my credit card company and dispute the charge, but given that I
agreed for a compromise of 600$ and signed the credit card slip, I am
not sure if I can do that.

I will report this to the BBB maybe, at least that way other people can
know aboutt the scam. But before that I would like hera their story one
more time.

Thanks all for the advise.

Definitely a scam. This is S.O.P. on a standup. They should of been able
to get it drained and running in a few minutes. If they charge your
credit card, make sure you dispute it.

However, I once broke a flywheel in the ocean. By the time I was able to
catch a wave in, my engine was filled with water, but I was unable to
start it. I should have taken some preventive measures, but I didn't
even think the engine had any water in it. Needless to say, my 2 month
old SBT crank was toast. SBT was nice enough to sell me another one at cost.
