Licences are now issued by Service Canada and that the format of the
licence number has also changed. I saw one this summer in Ontario that
began with ON... Does anyone know where I might find a list of
locations and numbers - or is it just the province digraph with a few
digits attached? (http://www.pdqwebdesign.ca/lib/provinces.html)

I suspect that the new licence numbers start with the two-character
province abbreviation (but I don't think I've seen anything official).
I've seen some new boats here in BC with licence numbers starting
"BC".

It is not necessary to change to the new format numbers when buying a
used boat - I recently bought a boat, and retained the original
(old-style) numbers when I transferred the licence.

I thought that one could already tell the place of licensing by the existing
(old) numbering system on boats? If this is so, can someone point me to the
list of codes vs. origins?

Yes I just had a confirmation that the new boat license uses the
provincial digraph (postal service) followed by digits (apparently in
sequence). And yes it's for new boats, but you can get one for an old
one if you wish - it gets you into the data base. Entering old license
numbers into the new system is also optional (and free).

Read the news page http://boating.ncf.ca/news.html#license.

I'm replacing the boating news page with the "Boating in Canada News"
blog at http://boatingincanada.blogspot.com (currently duplicated).
Contributions and feedback welcome! You can subscribe to the news feed

I don't know who put the examples (Ontario: ON1234, Quebec: PQ1234) but I
bet that someone realizes that Québec has used QC for many years and NOT the
old Province de Québec moniker (PQ).

They are, after all, a nation within a nation, like the native Canadians are
within Québec.

Yet another example of the creeping Americanization of Canada. The
format is the same as that used in the US.
In suspect this probably originated among the beancounters and
bureaucrats in attendance at last year's "Three Amigos" summit.
So how do we sort out ALberta and ALabama, Manitoba and Montana
I tried once to get the list of area designations in the old system.
Failed totally.

It looks like they figured that one out: Manitoba is MB and Alberta is AB,
isn't it?

Except the US boat license codes aren't *exactly* their postal
abbreviations, since they pre-date that scheme. Fer instance,
California is CF on boats, CA in the post; Washington IIRC WN vs WA.

And Massachusetts is MA in the mail but on boats is MS, which is
Mississippi's postal digraph. Miss uses MI on boats, but that's
Michigan's mail code. Michigan uses MC on boats.

And, brace yourself: Nebraska uses NB for their watercraft licenses. I
seem to recall we have a province with those postal initials...anyone
licensed a new boat in Bathurst or Shediac recently? Nebraska says
their licenses always end in two or three letters, and the Canadian
registrations I've seen are all digits after the province code, so
there isn't complete conflict.

As if I haven't already betrayed an obsession with trivia, I have also
tried to find a reference linking the former number-letter Canadian
codes to port of registration; I have seen (and lost) a printed list
but can't find anything online. All I know is, smaller is east, bigger
is west.

I have a recollection of a list of boat registration codes in the back
of a book called "Boating in Canada"(I think) written by Garth
Griffiths (also "I think"), and used by Canadian Power Squadrons as a
text for the Boating Course in 1968 or so (Why can I remember these
archaic details, when I don't remember what I did the day before
yesterday?)

Oops - that should be "boat licensing codes"...

Good memory Peter. I have the codes as scanned images on "Boating in
Canada". "Licence numbers" is linked from the home page index, the
Licence page and the site map. Originally scanned from Griffith and
rearranged as an image, and I notice I did not give credit --where
else would I have gotten the codes?! Will have to fix that.
