Post subject: used kayaks
Archived from groups: rec>boats>paddle (more info?)

Thanks again for all the help that has been offered here as I look for my first
kayak. Based on what has been said today I have decided against an inflatable
and decided to purchase a used recreational kayak. At first glance, the term
"recreational kayak" made me think of the cheap crappy boats they rent out at
the town pond, but after a little searching I have found that there are some
used recs available for under $500 that would suit my purposes just fine. My
main interest is to explore the islands of Long Island Sound on kayaking
journeys that would last no longer than 4 hours at a time. I have found a
number of online message boards where people sell used kayaks including E-bay
and onwatersports.com. Does anyone know of any others?

Chris

Look for outfitters in your area who rent decent boats. Often
they'll sell some of them off at the end of the season, and you can
get a good deal on a decent boat.

A local outfitter is also a good place to get info about where would
be appropriate to take your boat. The Sound, while somewhat
protected, is a pretty big body of water IIRC.

Lots of kayaks for sale...

First eliminate those that are out of your price range.

Then eliminate those for which the cost of shipping would be prohibitive.

Then eliminate those which indicate that they are whitewater boats.

With a web search you can look up the names of any remaining to see if it
looks like the kind of boat that you want.

This one would fit...

(NY) drastically reduced - prijon seayak - excellent condition-labor day
weekend - catskill, ny - $500. - double hatches& great riggings, tracking

That post was in response to a question regarding used boats. Apparently,
you missed the beginning of the thread.

I think we all missed it, Brian. I can't find it. It looks like perhaps
you changed the subject line because it does appear that your post titled
"www.paddling.net" was the first in the thread. No big deal, just made some
of us wonder. What with you being "insane" and all... Wink<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
