Post subject: Question installing outboard conctrol cables
Archived from groups: uk>rec>boats>motor (more info?)

Could anyone give me some pointers on correct procedure of installing
throttle / gear control cables for an outboard.

Control box is single lever which operates a gear cable and throttle cable.

In the full astern position :-
throttle half open and gear in reverse

as the lever is moved forward :-
throttle closes and gear lever moves forward towards neutral

In lever middle (neutral) position then the throttle is in idle and gear is
in neutral

as the lever is moved further forward the gear engages to ahead and the
throttle starts to move ahead.

Could anyone give me some tips on proper procedure for adjusting the control
cables length so that the engine

1. does not stall when gear is engaged
2. is not over revving when the gear is engaged

??

1: if the tick-over is correct this will not happen.
2: there is a threaded section on the end of the throttle cable at the
engine end that will allow you to adjust. The cams in the throttle lever
should not move the cable much until the gears have engaged.
