Hi all,
I got a second hand zodiac 3.10 m rib.
I am going to get a second hand engine but don't know if I should go for a 8
, 9.9 or the max allowed size of 15 HP.
I decided to go for a 2 stroke as I wil only use the boat for the summer
months and need it to be as simple as possible.
Are there any good sites that explain the basics of engine maintenance and
setup. I will use the engine in salt water.
Thanks for any advice

Get the maximum as you can alway run it at less than full throttle
which in turn will make it more efficient and last longer.

A search in google will return many sites I'm sure, but the RYA do a
simple book on outboard maintenance. Check any boating mag...

If you are going to keep the engine on the back of the rib then a 15 would be good. If you have to take it off, a lighter engine would be better.
The Tohatsu 9.8 is very powerful for its weight. I am not sure that an 8 would be enough for a 3.1 rib they are fine for 2 up in a sib.

Once you have an engine, get a service manual. The ones that cover a range of models are ok for basic servicing but I find lack the details if you really need to get serious.

2 strokes are probably best for a small rib my Avon supersport squats with a heavy 4 on the back (25Hp), but balances nicely with a 2.
Many of the new ribs coming out now have extended tubes further past the transom to support heavy 4 strokes.

He never did care for the river, did Montmorency.

Hi Victor

Try this site <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bosunsmate.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.bosunsmate.co.uk/</a> which is biased towards Ribs and
engines

Hope it helps

Dave
