Im a first time boat builder and sailor. Yesterday was launch day...all went
well, until the sail went up and the Teal took off, faster than I expected.
The tiller was in my hand, but soon the rudder was loose in the water. The
rudder is mounted with gudgeons and pintles, to Phil Bolger's plans. The
weight alone is fine when not moving to keep the rudder in place, but
then..away it goes. Ive thought of adding weight , or a ring to the bottom
of one of the pintle pins to secure. I need some advice from experienced
sailors. Thanks in advance. (Teal is a 12 foot, sailboat, 3 foot beam)

Roger,

The normal proceedure is to fit a spring clip just above the bottom pintle -
a good chandler should be able to advise.

Good luck,
Laurie.

I agree with Laurie. Laser has a simple clip that works well. Copy theirs,
or (gasp) buy one, if you must.

Rudder problems - I have a Prout 37 foot catamaran. Both rudders show signs of wear since rotation can be detected between the rudder shaft and the blade. Does anyone know how these rudders are constructed and how I should set about the repair. Many thanks Tony

Help! Need a new rudder for our Glen-L 12 - Hello, Please bear with me while I give you the background on this. A few years ago we bought the Glen-L 12 out of someone's front yard. I suppose it was not a very careful purchase. After sailing it a few times, I noticed some deficiencies with this..

How far should the rudder turn? - I'm wondering if I have the quadrant set up right. At full stop on the quadrant, looking at the rudder shows it's only turned about 45 degrees. Is this correct? Is that some theoretical limit of effective angle or something? Thanks.

Replacing my rudder... - I have asked a few questions recently about replacing my rudder and tiller on my Potter 15. For the moment I have found a piece of oak where the grain has the same curves as the old laminated/delaminated tiller. Used it today; worked fine and looks..
