I think my gel coat is gone. THe deck of my boat is metal flake and it wont
take a wax anymore. It gets white and chalky.

Will vertiglass repair this?
Suggestions? DIY?
Cost?

Thanks for all your help in advance

I used Vertglass on an 85 Navy blue gel that was almost baby blue. Buddy
used it on a 1963 Whaler interior gel, took a ton of pre cleaning in it
first (stains) but it literally looks like new gel.

It takes time, but I really have never seen anything like this stuff for
making Gel look new again. Only down side is you cannot wax over it, but
rather must apply additional coats as required down the road. Have never
seen it used on metal flake gel and you would need to be more careful with
the pre-clean and scrub solution, but it is amazing on boats I have had
experience with. Took about 15 coats on our Regal but only used 1/2 a
bottle doing it, blue band was about 16" high covering both sides and stern
of a 28'x10' boat. Based on that, 1 bottle would have done about 150sq-ft
and it was bad.

What's the difference between Vertglas and Polyglow ?

What do they actually do to the hull ?

Any downside ?

Appreciatively,

Courtney

A quote from April 1, 2004 (Vol 30 #7) Practical Sailor (I've never
personally used the stuff):

"Gelcoat Restoration: Back From the Dead"

"We used hull restorers from Vertglas, Poli-Glow, and New Glass-2 to revive
a beaten and battered powerboat.
Their thin acrylic film coatings bring a high-gloss sheen to a gelcoat.
They do require meticulous preparation and application, and can be tough to
remove. Product tested this time were: Poli Glow, Vertglas and New Glass-2."

"These wipe-on coatings consist of resins of higher molecular weight that
provide harder and more durable film than can be achieved with wax. The
products tested consist of water-based emulsions of acrylic or
acrylic/urethane resins. Their resins are in the form of tiny droplets that
are suspended in water. When applied, the water evaporates and the droplets
flow together to form clear films. These emulsions dry rapidly and require
multiple coats. The restorers require re-application about every 12
months."

I'm summarising now. The tester found little real difference between Poly
Glow and Vertiglas. Differences had more to do with clarity of included
directions and number and type of included applicators. The long term
results of this test haven't been published yet as not enough time has gone
by.
