I am in the process of buying second hand boat which comes with 40hp
motor connected to steering wheel and gear/throttle control. However I
wish to downsize motor to 6hp for the moment for use on canals. Can
anyone advise me how eay it is to connect steering rods, etc. Do I
need the same make of motor and are there specific motors without
handles? Thanks.

Its a very easy job to do the connection, if you can get the same make of
outboard then it will be easier still to do.
You need to make sure that the new outboard is able to be used by remote
controls/ steering and not just on a tiller handle.
