hello everyone. i have been on a kayak once in the ocean and enjoyed it
immensley. it was the type that you sit inside with a skirt around you. i
would like to purchase one and am looking for help. i'd like one that is
light enough for me to get it on and off the top of the car alone... i'm not
a huge guy. also, it seemed like the the one i was in was more enjoyable
than the "sit on top" variety, but if that's not true, please let me know.
i would use it primarily in the ocean (on calm days), calm rivers and lakes.
your guidance would be very much appreciated. also, any advice on paddling
in colder weather (e.g., tips on staying warm and safe).

Todd,
I suggest you check the archives of this newsgroup for previous responses to
this question.
Then find a local club and talk to the people there. Try different boats and
ask the owners why they like them.
If you are in the greater Baltimore/Washington DC area, the Chesapeake Paddlers
Association is in the beginning stages of planning Sea Kayaking 101 for this
winter. It will be an on-land class on things like boat designs and what to
look for.
Good luck and welcome to a great sport.

and put rec.boats.paddle in, there are 156,000 posts there, should keep you
busy for awhile! =>
