Post subject: battery (for my boat) question?
Archived from groups: can>rec>boating (more info?)

I have a Minn Kota trolling motor, I run off a 12v battery.

Does anyone know of a way to charge these batteries, so I am not constantly
buying a new battery?

Does anyone have expierence with those solar battery chargers (you mount the
solar panel on your boat, and hook up the cables to the battery)????

Any ideas etc.. would be greatly appreciated,
_Bigred

Use a battery charger - you can buy one at Canadian Tire (or many
other places) intended for charging car batteries - they will work
fine with your battery.

For this application, I think you should use a "deep cycle" battery
(often called "marine" or "RV") rather than a car starting battery.
Deep cycle batteries will tolerate frequent deep discharges much
better than starting batteries.

Always recharge the battery soon after use - lead-acid batteries don't
like to be left discharged for long (and charge the battery once a
month or so, even if you aren't using it.)

The solar panel will work to keep the battery charged and will charge it
up eventually if you have a big enough one, but it won't charge it while
you're fishing. You need a battery charger to plug it into as soon as
you get home, or the alternator on your outboard (or car) while you're
running.

For a Minn Kota or other deep discharge type application, it should
be a deep discharge type. There are hybrid types, designed for deep
discharge and occasional light starting duty.

Charge it the way you would any other.

Connect it to your car or boat charging system. Do not discharge it
beyond the point where it is obviously starting to slow down (about
60% of advertised capacity). Do not leave it discharged for long
before charging it back up. Get an hygrometer to monitor it's state
of charge, A Minn Kota battery tester (L.E.D. style precision
voltmeter) is a rough guide only, it's accuracy depends on
temperature both of the battery and of the ambient air or tester itself.

This is a troll, right?
