To whom it might take an interest to...

I've decided to sell my GPS unit I used when cycling from Dorset to
Romania over the summer (see www.roadtoromania.co.uk for more info on
that). I bought the unit new in June for £299 and also a bike mount
for £13.50 (included in the auction). The original receipt is included

and there are 6 months left on the warranty. Starting price is £75 and

Special Delivery is included in the auction's end price.

The unit has the altantic basemap installed covering Europe and parts
of the Middle East and this shows information such as bouys and other
maritime navigational aides.

It also has a function to help choose the best times to go
fishing/hunting based on the movements of the moon/sun.

Sorry to offend or go against your newsgroups terms of posting. To risk
being pedantic, it's not an ebay product it is my product that had
great use of over the summer. I'm now trying to clear my student loan
and if selling a product that I don't expect to use again for a couple
of years will wipe £100 off of it then great.

I posted this first on uk.rec.cycling and wasn't sure whether anybody
would be offended by it. The only response was that it was ok, but the
netiquette is to prefix the subject with FA (for auction).

Apologies once again.

Yep, Ebay is risky, and I don't use PayPal.

Advertising e-bay products on newsgroups that have a charter banning
adverts is against e-bay terms and conditions.

You're taking a hell of a risk buying anything on ebay anyway.

The above is certainly true. Ebay is not secure. My EBAY account was
accessed by persons unknown and they put up for sale Mobile phones in my
name. They also infiltrated my Pay Pal account as part of the scam and
opened a fictitious Bank account in my name. Payments for the goods were
sent to the fictitious account. Luckily I spotted it early but some £1500
was lost. Paypal covered me in full and accepted that the transactions were
fraudulant. Meanwhile EBAY does not accept it and said I listed the phones.
They are about to take me to court for the listing and final value fee of
£26.32.
Ebay is totally insecure and they treat customers like fraudsters and
basically called me a liar. My advice is steer well away from Ebay,
particularly if they have your credit card details!!!

Well the charter to UK.Rec.Sailing allows posting of private ads, but
disallows trade ads. There is no mention of e-bay and I don't see how
use of e-bay automatically makes it 'trade'.

charters can be found at www.usenet.org.uk

Charter of uk.rec.sailing
(Not Moderated)
uk.rec.sailing will discuss any and all topics relating to sailing
activity in Britain, Eire and European waters. Posts from dinghy
sailors, wind-surfers, yachtsmen and women, and all those with an
interest in the sport. Posts may include Class Association details,
Open Meetings, race accounts, events and issues affecting sailors in
area given above.
Advertising
Short announcements (less than 50 lines) of events relevant to
readership. For Sale or Want-To-Buy announcements from non-commercial
posters welcomed; blatant off-topic or commercial advertising not
required.
Binaries
Must not be posted in this group: however references to FTP material
and Web sites are welcomed

Other groups may have different rules.

The only bit of general etiquette you may have offended is that you
shouldn't post ads to groups you don't use.

So on the whole I wouldn't worry too much.

I've sold and brought nearly 100 items on ebay in the last 2 years and never
had an issue.
The odds of someone accessing your ebay or paypay details are the same as
having your credit card skimmed or your identity stolen. It just depends how
you use it!
