My friend and I both have ZXI's. His is a 1100, mine is a 900. Both are
experiencing almost the same symptoms. His boat runs great and smooth but
only revs to 6000 rpm. No cavitation or misfiring at all. Mine does the same
thing but only intermittently. The problem comes and goes at will, but when
rapping correctly runs like a striped ass ape.Today
I took off across the lake at full speed and it ran topped out for about a
minute and then the rpms started dropping down to 6K. After a few minutes it
started revving fine again.

Process of elimination: If it was carbs running lean or clogged fuel
filter, boat would have probably siezed by now, correct?
If it was reed valve problems they would be real hard to start,
correct??
If it was low compression, would run shitty at low rpms also, right?
If it was an air leak on bottom end it would idle real high and probably
sieze up, right?
We checked the heat sensors by switching from a boat that runs perfect,
so not that.
Why is 6K a magic number?
What happens if the cdi goes bad? What are the symptoms and is there a
way to diagnose the ignition system?
both boats have new plugs. Mine has been doing this for three summers
but getting way more frequent this summer. Used to be maybe only once a day,
now very often.

PLEASE HELP IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fred

It could be the fuel pumps. I had a 1100 ZXI last season here at my shop that
did the same thing. I cleaned and rebuilt all 3 carbs with the original CDK III
rebuild kits from kawasaki. The fuel pump diaphrams were shot. After I put it
back together it ran fine.

Probably a little rich on the HS Jet. Could need a rebuild. Could just need
a new spring, or a tiny o-ring.

Only way to tell is it check with a pop-off guage.

 > Why is 6K a magic number?

My guess is this is where the boat completly passes through the transition
stage of the low speed jet to the high
speed jet.

Better to get the pop-off tester and check your pop-off pressure.

When that is ok.. then go and plug tune....

Again, it could just be a faulty o-ring in the carb. Something you will
never tune-out!

Rememeber... if you choose to tune your carbs...There is a process people
have followed for a while...

Set the ..... Idle, low speed, "transition", and then high speed.

Anyways... look at any one the SBTotheweb.com , TauCeti , PWCtoday.com , and
Jetski.com, They all seem to have nurmerous documents in the forums on how
tune your boat.

I have raced these motors for years, the crank seals are not prone to leak,if
one does it will turn one of the plugs white as each chamber is sealed from
each other.it will be one or three.three really the only one that could get
fresh air.the igniters are pretty much bullet proof.the box it is in is crap.I
guarantee it has leaked and all your connectors are covered in crap.the only
ground for the system is in the box.clean it.[3 wire connector}brn
,blk, brn.have seen the fuel switch on the tank go bad[clogged up].I also
replace alot of the stock fuel pumps with mikuni high volume pumps.good
luck,scott
