Here, save yourself a few hundred dollars. Call the USCG oil forensic
lab and ask them how they identify Evinrude Oil from all the others.
You're in for a shock. I was.
http://www.rdc.uscg.gov/MSL/Default1.htm
At the time, I was in a hot debate with some Yamaha lovers who would put
nothing but Yamalube in their precious Yamahas at $30/gallon, not the
$6/gallon Exxon Walmart was selling at the time. So, doing a little
research to prove a point, I called the CG lab and talked with the
experts....
"You guys work with oil samples all the time, what company's TC-W3 is the
same as Yamalube, the brand of TC-W3 Yamaha sells for $30/gallon?", I
asked them.
"I can't tell you.", he responded. "I'd have to have the lot number of
the Yamalube because the oil's characteristics are never the same from
manufacturer to manufacturer."
I was floored. What's dis? Different manufacturers?? "Do they change
manufacturers of Yamalube?", I asked. "Oh, all the time, from contract
to contract."
Oh, oh, this is trouble. For $30/gallon Yamalube was supposed to be made
by PhD oil analysts, personally, just for me. Now I find out the damned
stuff is made by the lowest bidder for this lot, different from the
lowest bidder for the last lot.
Moral to the story? Buy TC-W3 or any oil from a reputable MAJOR oil
company you can trust, not from some engine company trying to maximize
the profits for their dealers buying from the lowest bidder....or from
some pyramid scheme rebottler like Amsoil also rebottling pest control
chemicals that doesn't own a refinery. It's lots cheaper and you KNOW
you're getting a quality product from the company's OWN refineries!
Exxon-Mobil is great.
So isn't Texaco or Chevron (Chevron makes a lot of Yamalube I found out,
but not always.)
The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Protection Act, a Federal law, says in
15USC50 section 2302(c):
"(c) Prohibition on conditions for written or implied warranty; waiver by
Commission
No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied
warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such
product, any article or service (other than article or service provided
without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by
brand, trade, or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this
subsection may be waived by the Commission if—
(1) the warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product
will function properly only if the article or service so identified is
used in connection with the warranted product, and
(2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest."
This means that if the dealer or Evinrude says you MUST or SHOULD ONLY
use Evinrude brand oil in your engine to keep the warranty in
force....They MUST GIVE YOU THE OIL FREE FOR THE TERM OF THE WARRANTY.
It's why Mr Goodwrench doesn't tell you your GM car will just
disintegrate unless you buy your Chevy dealer's $12/quart oil and must
only get it fixed in a Chevy dealer, or else.
You don't need XD-50 or XD-100. But, if they tell you you do, they must
GIVE IT TO YOU FREE.
