I'm curious to find out whether anyone besides me (an admitted technogeek)
would see value in having wireless Internet access while on board either at
their home port or while cruising in their local area.

I know I would be able to spend more time aboard if I was able to stay in
touch with home and/or office via e-mail. On the other hand, the 'Admiral'
(read: my wife) might not appreciate me being afloat more than I already am.

Interesting question
I work off and on for a wireless ISP as an installer and I have tried to get
them to pursue marina's.. What we could do for boaters is amazing, on the
same token, what boaters could do for themselves with the right information
and knowledge is too.. Since most of the wireless technologies is based on
line of sight and since most marine environments is just that for miles....

As far as wireless goes, I carry a cell phone with the numbers of local
marinas in case I need a tow. Don't think I'll bother next season ... I'll
just carry the numbers, everybody else out there's packin :-)And to-day at
the local ski hill, a guy was sitting in the lounge, papers spread all
around on the table conducting business while his kids were out skiing ...
so I suppose at least the kids got out on the slopes. If I was gonna go say
Blackberry or whatever, just because I considered myself a technogeek, value
= 0.

I would not be too keen on having full access to internet while
cruising (least of all to get in touch with the office!). However, an
e-mail system is nice to have on board. Cheapest route for offshore
cruisers is to become certified ham-radio operators with HF
frequencies privileges. This provides access to HF communications
world-wide (http://www.winlink.org; <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.airmail2000.com/" target="_blank">http://www.airmail2000.com/</a>) at a
minimal cost and investment. Coastal-cruisers with at least Basic Ham
privileges also make use of VHF data wireless communications like
Packet or PKS31.

CH.
