Here is a question for all you outboard mechanics:

I have a boat with a 9.9HP Honda Outboar kicker motor. The boat will be in
the water all winter.

How do I protect the Honda from freezing and breaking?

Should I lower it so that the leg is in the water - or out of the water?

The boat is moored in salt water, but we get enough fresh water from two
rivers plus local run off that I have seen sheets of ice at a time when I
did not think it was that cold to freeze salt water.

If the leg is in the water and the surface of the water freezes, so will the
water in the leg.. If the leg is raised, any water trapped in the housing
will freeze under the same conditions..

I would think a bubbler would be the only choice for this, they cause a
current under the boat bringing warmer deep water to the surface, as long as
the bubbler was under the transom it would probably be fine. Alternately,
depending on the boat, a vertically raising bracket might work, one that
allows the motor to be raised above the surface, but remain vertical as
apposed to tilted. Most outboards drain when in this position, but check
with Honda to make sure your model does..

Take it off and take it home. If there is water in the system and it freezes
you have major problems. The engine will not totallt drain even if you lift
the motor out. In addition if you are using in salt water you need to flush
it out with fresh or the lines will all plug up (I speak from experience)
