I enjoy my Cobra Wave Witch. It is 14' x 22" x4" and has two fins and a
rudder.

On the east coast most of the surf is right at the beach so I like a SOT having
seen a guy rip the coaming out of a decked boat while at a surf clinic with
Nigel Foster. With thigh straps, I can roll the boat.

I did snap the rudder on the beach once, and Cobra said "That shouldn't happen"
and replaced it free.

Last year at the beach I rented an Wavesport Chaos(Kaos??). It was great. A
friend lent me an Old Town Sandpiper (outfitted w/ thigh straps) this year.
Both are SOT's. I was surprised at how well the Sandpiper did in the surf
(up to a point- when the surf got really big its performance diminished. It
was very comfortable too. I've paddled Ocean Kayaks (a Frenzy was one) also,
but too much time has elapsed for me to give a good comparison.
I enjoyed them all. Surf conditions are such an important factor.
A definite pattern I've noticed: When non paddlers borrow the boats, they
don't stay out long. They use up all their energy getting past breakers. One
ride in and they're too exhausted to go out again.
Don't forget sunscreen on the tops of your feet and ankles!
Someone told me Carolina Beach near Wilmington, NC is a surf kayaking
hotspot. Anybody know if that's so?

I bought a used Prijon Twister several years ago for about $175. <S> And
yes, it's small, fast and light. It's great on easy whitewater on hot summer
days, and folks sometimes offer comments about "paddling a surf board". It's
a SOT that has a reputation for being more difficult to control than others,
but it's not bad.

I've vacationed at Carolina Beach for several years, and the surf is great
for a kayak. Population density is low, so swimmers are not a problem even
during midday. The surf breaks far enough out so you can get a decent ride.
I can't say the same for places like Emerald Isle and the Outer Banks,
however, maybe I was just in the wrong sections. <shrug>

And if you rig it with thigh straps it's one of the easiest boats to roll
you'll find. I have also found that the stern is very "grabby" on the
Twister.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

small, fast, light, cheap: if you are reasonably handy and can spend a
few weekends (about 3) and have acces to a place where you can do some
serious DIY: try the surfyak (http://www.surfyak.com/). Gets you an HP
surfkayak for as less as 150 dollars new.

Otherwise: I paddle a plastic Mega X-Ray
(http://www.mega-kayaks.co.uk/) and have a Riot Tekno as a playboat
(which surfs great they say. Never tried it as I've got the X-Ray).

The Tekno isn't the most modern boat and can be had for a few hundred
dollars.

Otherwise, try the Prijon Delerium. It's supposed to be a good surfer
and can be ordered new from the factory (Prijon) for 299 euros!

If you want a waveski/SOT:
Again, if you're into DIY: the woody ski
(http://www.harborside.com/~dchurch/)

Otherwise: I'm afraid I don't know but there's lots of good waveski's
out there I guess?
