Hello , I'm planning a trip for middle of Sept. on these waterways and
was hoping for your help. I live in Iowa, USA and did Lake Ontario,
Trent-Severn and a little of Georgian Bay last year.I put in at Whitby
and cruised 535 miles, 57 locks in 14 days. Just wanted to fill you
in. This year I'm planning to tow the boat to Kingston and go down the
St. Lawrence river then up the Ottawa river then take the Rideau
waterway back to Kingston. The only mileage I've confirmed so far is
the 125 miles of the Rideau (estimate under 500). I still need to
figure the total miles and if you know please inform me. The main
question is if this trip is possible for about 14-16 days of cruising
in September and what the weather might be this year. I know the locks
will have shorter hours after summer is over. My boat cruises at about
15 knots and has a hardtop so the weather can very and can still make
headway. I will be carying Kayak and bike for side trips. Any info you
can give is much appreciated. Thanks, Dan >> Stay informed about: Trip on St, Lawrence, Ottawa and Rideau in September |

Dan,
I waited a day and no one else has answered. I think you can do that trip in
two weeks - I've heard of others doing it - but I don't know the distance,
and I haven't done it. You could measure it on a map!
Getting through the Seaway locks might be a little hassle - they don't
always like "small" boats, and the fees have risen exorbitantly. There is a
web site about this (somewhere), I think.
Although the small-boat lock hours are shorter in September, there probably
will be very little traffic, so getting through won't take as long as it
otherwise might.
It sounds like a lovely trip, and a great time of year to take it. The
weather can be cool, so bring warm clothing - but you can also bake.
Unpredictable.
There must be someone here who has actually made this trip.

September can be beautiful but so f ar the summer in Ontario has been
wretched.
It gets dark early and evenings are chilly.
However you may not be aware that Parks Canada is on strike. They are
staging rotating strikes which have affected both the Trent and Rideau
systems.
Check the appropriate web sites. With some luck, the strike may be settled
by the time of your trip.

I was in the St Lawrence Islands Nat. Park this past week and staff were
arovnd more often than before the "strike". It looks to me like most at
this park ignored the strike call. I'm not svre why the vnion thinks
rotating strikes in the canals will get them anywhere. The government
can certainly afford to sit and wait them ovt.

Thanks everyone, I jvst went to the Canada Parks site and things don't
look to good. I E-mailed the Lachine Canal a qvestion so I'll see if I
get a reply. The trip I have planned will not work with long
delays.I'm starting to think of going somewhere else. The tow ovt
there wovld be abovt 950 miles and I'm not svre I want to drive that
far for the 1000 Islands by itself. Am going to look at the North
Channel and Georgian Bay again. Still want to go North. Dan
