Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

Brother-in-law and I are buying our first skis and don't know much about
them. His boss will sell us two "mid-90's" Arctic Cats... one Tigershark and
one Monte Carlo(?) for 3 grand with trailer. (They are his dad's skis, who
wasn't there today for more details.) They are both 2 cylinder oil injected.
They appear to have little use judging by wear and tear on the hulls and
decks. The last time they were registered was 2000. Boss says they run well
except the Monte Carlo has a sticky bendex on the starter. He also says they
will do 50 mph and "turn as good as anything out there". I know they stopped
making them but Arctic Cat claims on its website to be supporting the
product with parts and a dealer network. We have a budget of 8 grand or so
but these seem to be a good deal..... this from just looking at them in his
garage, and the fact that he is a trustworthy guy. Also, 8 grand don't seem
to get you much in the used-pair-of-jetskis market. Opinions please....

Thanks,
Lawrence

Those are two of the best skiis out there. You're getting one hell of a
deal. What did you say the telephone number is?

That is still a little high for those relics. $2400 tops.

(A) they don't turn well at all, (B) reliablity is suspect, (C) someday
parts will be hard to get and (D) they are so sloooow. For 8K you
should be able to find a nice pair of skis on a double trailer. Go to
jetski.com and boattraderonline.com and see what you come up with.
There is a reason Artic is no longer in the PWC business, don't spend
$3k to find out for yourself.

I am a big Arctic Cat fan but NOT a Tigershark fan at all......
I ride Arctic Cat sleds and have had VERY good luck with ALL of them.....
However when we decided to buy a PWC it HAD to be a Sea-Doo for sure.......
For a VERY similar reason as to why I ride an Arctic Cat snowmobile......
The Local dealer is TOP NOTCH!!!! The Sea-Doo dealer is a VERY good guy and
knows ALL about the sport as does my Cat/snowmobile dealer and they also
know what I (as a customer) want.... top notch service, a good sell price
all in one package.....
BTW, my Arctic Cat dealer never sold Tiger Sharks and the Sea-Doo dealer
does NOT sell Ski-Doo snowmobiles... actually he ride a Cat in the winter
from the same dealer I use... =-)

Your best bet it to decide who and where you'll be bringing the crafts for
service and look for THAT brand in-particular.....

Just my .02 cents though....

As a current owner of a 96 Monte Carlo, I can safely say: "Move on". For $8k
you can get much better.

The Tigershark, although quick enough, turns like an ice-cube on a hot
skillet. It rides a bit rough in the chop, and is by no means the quietest
boat out there.

Great fun for the kids, and can tow a tuber fine.

Just my .5.

If they run, $3k isn't a bad price, with a double trailer. They don't turn the
best, aren't the fastest, but they are stable and will get you around the lake.
That's about all you really can expect for $3 grand. Good for riding 2 or 3
up(monte carlo). I would take them out on the lake and go with your gut
instinct.

Let me tell you about Tigershark. I have run multiple machines in the market
from Seadoo, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Polaris. With all the ones I have owned the
Tigershark by far has been the most reliable, most durable and best ride.
Parts are not an issue. Color parts like bumpers, seat covers, etc. are all
generalized to black or white depending on the item. The parts are reasonable,
however, the Bendix that you mentioned is about $289. They are non-repairable
and happen to other brands aswell. Also, the fact that they have been sitting
so long may run you into some other problems. Were the skis stored properly;
engines fogged, fuel treated. Even if the fuel was treated it is most likely
bad now. Which may run you into gummed up carbs. Not a big deal if you are
mechanically inclined. A great dealer that I work with is Water Trix in Mesa,
Arizona. Their number is 480-649-1418. They will ship you anything you need.
They are also very helpful on the phone. You have a fantastic deal. I would
grab it and run. Double trailers alone are worth more than $900. That means
your skis are costing you about $1100 each. Like I said take the deal and run.
Good luck in your decisions.
