Post subject: Testing CDI (crank no start [spark]) on '96Yamaha Waveblast
Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

I have a '96 Yamaha Waveblaster II with a 760 in it. I was wondering
if any has a service manual in PDF or any format or at least know how
to test the CDI.
I live in San Diego California and so far all my riding has been in
salt water (bays and on ocean). The Blaster is well maintained, no
oil residue in hull, plugs changed/cleaned every few runs, using good
quality lube and gas, never had a engine or electrical problem so
far......until

Heres what happened:

Was running fine after sitting out of service for about 2 years. It
had no problems just had no time to take it out. Cleaned it up
checked plugs, lubed all points (steering, jet-cone, carb(s) linkage,
atc.), and put in new battery.
Ran it at home with water clean-out on, ran fine.

Took it out, had a little trouble starting it (wasn't getting enough
fuel) but then once the carbs were primed up started fine. Shut it
off a few times and restarted just to make sure, no problem.
Ran for about 45 minutes without a hitch. Full throttle, part
throttle, hard turns, mild jumps (2-3 feet off wakes). Was coming
back in to boat ramp, and about 1/4 mile away just stops.
Was able to coast it over to the beach, popped the seat off and opened
the hood. It cranks fine, so I pulled off a spark plug wire and used
a key to check for spark. I usually don't have to much to
repair/diagnos while riding. No spark!
So some one towed me in to the ramp and now its home.
I have pulled the CDI box out to check for water, none. Dry as a
bone. While in there i checked for any kind of burn marks for any
kind of shorting, none.
But still no spark.
The CDI I have has 8 wire plug on it (CDI P/N 64X-85540-00-00) if
anyone knows how to test this or at least eliminate it as a cause of
the problem I would be greatly appreciated. Be willing to trade
software if you need ( I have tons of software)
Please Help me! Thank you

I would take apart the start stop switch and take a look at that first, if im
not mistaken, the second time the start stop switch went on a 92 waverunner III
i had it would crank, but not give off any spark. After a little while, it
wouldnt crank anymore. I had thought that if it went bad that it wouldnt crank
at all, but thats how it happened. Just unscrew those two screws and take a
look at the rubber boot that covers the little piston under where the lanyard
goes. If its dry rotted and you can see cracks to the inner components then its
most likely what it is. easy way to check would be to pull another waverunner
up along side and connect that start stop switch to your blaster II thats what
i did at that time. good luck.

I appreciate the advice.

Went out the other day and took the start/stop switch off to check for
any corrosion or any other signs. All good. Not even an ounce of
corrosion. Good but bad, cause it still won't start.

I went by the Yamaha dealer today to order the service manual, so
hopefully that may shed some light on my problem, or atleast help to
rule out some parts.
The sad thing is that I have the tools to fix it just don't have the
service manual. Anyway should be here soon.

I thank you for replying so quickly and if you have any other ideas I
will be glad to entertain them. Thank you<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
