Drew:
For years, we used a system of rolled pads to carry our canoes and kayaks -
basically heavy felt cloth wrapped around swim noodles, held together with
duct tape. We tied pieces of thin rope tightly to both ends of the two pads,
then jammed those in the doors - lashed the boats to the pads - and used
good nose and stern lines. Never had a problem in 1000's of kms. of travel.
Got an old BIC rack as a gift from a friend last summer, so we don't use
the pads anymore - but we keep 'em around to use when friends with rack-less
cars need to carry a boat. If you want more info, you can e-mail me at
vk1nf.DeleteThis@yahoo.ca - might be able to dig up a pic or two.
Regards,
Rick

You could do something like this cartop carrier.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.thesportsauthority.com/sm-riverside-cartop-carriers-standard-kayak-kit--pi-1325764.html" target="_blank">http://www.thesportsauthority.com/sm-riverside-cartop-carriers-standar...ayak-ki</a>
Harmony also makes them but they cost a little more.

Try those foam bars for swimming or an inflatable mattress , or a bunch
of moving van blankets and strap it down with two ratchet straps. Open
the doors while running the straps. Stabilize the bow and stern each
with a clothesline triangle to the bumpers.. Get down and grovel under
your car and you will see hitching rings just behind the bumpers. Ive
driven two hudred miles with this. the sound of the wind on the straps
was un nerving. Shorter trips should be fine.

Were the straps buzzing or flapping real fast? When hauling freight on
a flatbed trailer, I always put a twist or 2 in the strap where it
comes down the side. That keeps it from vibrating or buzzing. You've
seen tractor-trailers on the interstate hauling a flatbed trailer and
the strap is vibrating and buzzing/flapping. It looks a little loose
but it's just the wind rushing across it at speed. If those straps are
given a twist or 2, they tend not to buzz and flap. It doesn't look
good to be hauling a load of freight and your straps are all
fluttering. Gets the attention of DOT real fast. Some old timer taught
me this when I
pulled flatbeds one summer.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
