I just bought a 2004 Triumph Bay190 center console with a Yamaha F150
4stroke. I am trying to get a list of items to check during delivery. Please
help.

Thanks,
Paul

The professional surveyor you hired will know what to look for. That's why he
was worth the money you paid for his services.

You must do that for a living. This is a new boat and I wasn't hiring
someone for this task.

That's a great flip answer. Paul might be best off hiring a surveyor. But
even with that he might like to learn what to look for.

Well, I've only had two boats, neigher much like the one you are buying
and neigher new when I bought them. So, my list is probably BS, but I'll
try a few things. Mostly I'll probably hit the obvious things and miss the
things an experienced person would look for. Anyway...

- First, take your time. You probably paid a bit for this...so don't
feel pressured. Maybe have a 3rd person along to "chat" with
whomever while you take your time & look closely at everything.

- Are all the options you asked for there. I don't know what those
might be, but anything special that should be there.

- I'm assuming you can do a sea trial. Running it for a decent
amount of time, being sure it handles well in all manuvers. Hard
over to left, right, and backing.

- That the engine starts & performs well both when cold and warm.

- That all gauges work. Temperature gague works. Ammeter reads
that charging is occuring. Depth gague and/or speed indicator work.
Oil pressure works.

- All switches and lights work.

- Open and handle anything that moves. You want to be sure
each thing moves and reseats well.

- Take the cover off the engine.

- Part of all this is a mini-training course for you. The dealer
can help you learn some things.

- Have VHF radio on the boat - try it out.

- Have 12 volt "cigarette" sockets - try 'em out.

- Do you know what lines, fenders, anchor rode, anchor
etc. you are expecting (if any) will come with the boat??

- What other items are either supposed to come with it
or that you are providing: Life jackets, Throwable PDF,
Fire extinguishers? Boat hook? Paddles?

- It will probably be daytime when you check her out. Remember
to check all lights both navigation & cockpit.

- Check out the bilge. Let some water in (I assume there is
a plug) and check out the bilge pumps. If the pumps
have both manual & float switches, why not be sure they
all work?

- Batteries: Is this (or these) of the right capacity for the boat?
I assume they would give you the right items...but "trust but
verify" is what this is all about, right?

- If there are any canvaces, mooring covers, etc...try them out.
Put them on. Again, I assume they would be factory made by
the dozen so would fit perfectly...but who knows if they put
the wrong one in your boat somehow.

- Are there fishing live-wells? All work, no leaks?

Put another way: Start at one point and SLOWLY go around the
entire boat. Everything you see...actually touch it. Every handle, gague,
hose, wire, etc. Ask yourself, is there anything about this I can
check? Do this both inside the boat and outside. And with the
engine cover off. This system will make you think about pretty
much every system on the boat. The only thing you'll miss are
items that just aren't there.

OK - maybe all that will make the delivery guy hate you. But
most of that doesn't take any longer to do than to read here.

Hope that gives you ideas and/or gets others responding here.

No, I don't do that for a living, and I wasn't kidding in the slightest.

A new boat needs to be professionally surveyed before the new owner takes
possession and pays the balance due. This is pretty standard, and the smart
thing to do. Brand new boats can have defects ranging from minor cosmetic
blemishes up to completely unseaworthy hulls, or engines mounted out of
alignmnent.

People have bought brand new boats, and ended up paying a lawyer a lot more than
they would have paid a surveyor, and in the end, at best, they come out with
most of the money they spent if they are lucky, and no boat for a season or two
while they fight it out in court.

A lot depends on how good the dealer is.

The last two boats that I bought brand new the dealer stood behind the boat
100%. I took delivery of the boat and ran it until it was ready for its
first oil change at 25 hours and then brought the boat in with a list of all
the petty little things that needed attention and the dealer took care of
it.

If your dealer doesn't have such a good reputation then I would, as a
minimum, make sure that everything worked. When you pick the boat up:

Operate all the lights.
Run the blower.
Run everything electronic (stereo, VHF, etc.)
Open every hatch and access port.
Make sure the bilge pump operates. Reach down into the bilge and lift the
float by hand.
Sound the horn.
Make sure the boat is properly equipped: Life jackets, throwable
ring/cushion, etc.

If the boat is on a trailer, make sure that the wheels are torqued down
properly (I know people that had a wheel fall off their trailer on the first
trip to the water!). Make sure the boat is tied down to the trailer
properly.

The real test will be when you put it in the water. Look for water leaks.
Check for fuel leaks.

If there is anything that isn't right, get the boat back to the dealer ASAP.

BB is absolutely correct. My slip mate bought a brand new Hunter 426
DS. I advised him to have it surveyed. His response was "we don need
no steenkin surveyors". Two years later after lawyers, Hunter's
involvement and a transfer of service to another dealer, all the
issues are still not resolved. Do NOT take possession of a boat till
all issues are addressed.
