As to folding boats on the Alsek, Clem Rowert of Fairbanks, with a small
group of friends, made the first modern descent of the Alsek in early
versions of Kleppers sometime in the early sixties. However, they didn't
run Turnback, choosing to do the 17 mile portage instead. At that time
there were just blank white areas on the available maps.
Clem ran an outdoor store for many years in Fairbanks, and in 1998 (?) he
did a slide show for Fairbanks Paddlers with his very old 4x4 glass slides
he made from his Alsek trip in the 60's.
