I have been searching for an article, which I thought was regarding a
solo first descent of the Alsek in Alaska. I thought it was by Walt
Blackadar, in which he reported seeing a wrecked Folbot on the river
bank, and could not believe that anyone would have tried this descent
in a folder.

I could be wrong about the specific article, because I have read
accounts of Walt's trip, which did not include the reference to the
Folbot. I have been Googling for this story, and can not seem to find
it.

So I thought I would see if any of you recall the story. Your help
would be appreciated. Thanks, RkyMtnHootOwl.

No, I don't remember that story. Walt's article was in National
Geographic so maybe that's the place to do the search. I do remember
that once he was committed into the trip that he wrote rather
passionately that this river was unrunnable and for anyone else who was
considering it, to think again.

As to folding boats on the Alsek, Clem Rowert of Fairbanks, with a small
group of friends, made the first modern descent of the Alsek in early
versions of Kleppers sometime in the early sixties. However, they didn't
run Turnback, choosing to do the 17 mile portage instead. At that time
there were just blank white areas on the available maps.
Clem ran an outdoor store for many years in Fairbanks, and in 1998 (?) he
did a slide show for Fairbanks Paddlers with his very old 4x4 glass slides
he made from his Alsek trip in the 60's.
