Its on the cards that cheap red diesel for boats will disappear w.e.f.
1.1.07 as a result of EU Duty harmonisation. In other words instead of
paying 34p a litre at the marina we pay full road tax price of abt 90p!

This will affect all who presently use red diesel. The Royal Yachting
Association managed to defer this proposal a while back. They now have a new
petition and the boating mags have also followed this line. Many people
sacrifice a lot to have a boat. Gordon Brown now whats to tax every aspect
of our existence. Even a £22 fishing licence to fish in the sea! - when
there are very few fish left to catch. Whatever next?
Does anyone have any further info on this 'new' tax?

As part of the same EU plot, all fuels are to leveled off so that the
cost of a particular fuel is the same right across the EU, this would
mean a substantial drop in UK fuel prices. It would also make diesel
substantially cheaper than petrol, like it is elsewhere.
This would be a very good thing in UK which currently has the highest
fuel prices in the EU.
Odd how only bits of these *possible* changes are publicised in the UK
press. PBO has the full story in the September issue.

I for one wish they would hurry up.
As a diesel car owner the harmonisation of fuel tax would make a big reduction in my car fuel, which would off set many times the relatively small rise in red diesel.
Remember the proposel is not to raise the price of red to the current road price but the europen price whis is a lot less.
( But thats not such a good story for the Daily Mail Wink )

It will still be about twice the price that red is now though.

However, as far as automotive fuels are concerned, I have always thought it
wrong that the one fuel which is used for commercial transport is taxed
higher than all others. I do also have a diesel car though.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Probably UK is the only country in the EU that does that.
