Hi ! I've been paddling my 15 foot Orca for about 6 or 7 years -- starting out with no experience. It's a good boat to grow into.
I'm 5' 4" ( 163 cm) and about 155 lbs (71kg). It's a good length for quiet rivers, and even for rivers that are fast (but not whitewater rapids). It's great for crossing lakes in quiet water or rough water.
I've been in 4 foot choppy water on Lake Michigan, and on quiet inland lakes and rivers. It can hold a lot of stuff for an expedition. It's a very stable boat -- with good primary stability (feels great when sitting still) and secondary stabilty (feels stable when underway).
I think it's a good choice for a beginner. I didn't get mine with a rudder, and ended up installing one due to the kind of paddling I do, which includes long trips with open water crossing at times. But I don't use it often and rarely on rivers. It's quite maneuverable without it.
Good luck ! And don't forget to learn basic safety skills -- even a "fair weather paddler" needs to know how to do a "wet exit and re-entry."
