I seem to remember that either Merc or Yamaha (or maybe both) have a plastic
threaded water hose connection on the lower cowl above the waterline for a
cold non-running flush.

Yes, but when we discuss that with guys here around in Sydney - Australia
(even Mercury service centres), it seems that none of them use this way of
flushing engine as they always say that it doesn't get to the thermostat as
the engine is cold !!

Therefore they advice us to go for the ear cover at the bottom of the engine
with the standard garden fit with tap wide open and engine on. The only
downside of this is going to be the noise as it is a 2 stroke with the
exhaust in the air Wink

The upper flush fitting was meant to be used on moored boats in salt water.
The muffs are good for trailered boats and yes it is a bit noisy. If I had
that problem I would consider trailing to the nearest non-salt lake on the
way home from a fishing trip. That is what we did in Coos Bay Oregon.
Sometimes us "Techies" get over-impressed with ourselves. Speaking of
"techies" surely they would let you give it a quick dip in their test tank
for a slimey oily flush.

It may be loud , but i wouldnt have thought that you would need to run it
for very long, say 15 - 20 secs with fresh water running through it
