Greetings all -

I am writing from Portland, Oregon, USA to find out what the best
boating magazines in England are. In the spirit of disclosure, I am the

sales manager for a manufacturing company that specializes in
aftermarket marine accessories. We have little to no knowledge of
boating in England and would like to learn more.

I have seen Waterways World mentioned in several places. Are there
others you read and trust?

If you are curious about who we are, please feel free to check out our
website: www.ironwoodpacific.com.

Thank you so much - your feedback and input is appreciated.

Tony -

Thank you so much for all of your input. Your enthusiasm and
willingness to share are most helpful. I'll be contacting you soon (off
the forum) for a greater mindshare.

Many thanks!
Erin

First you need to define your market more than you have. I note that you
have not posted to the UK sailing group, so we can assume that you are
aiming at motor boaters.

The UK MB market is split into two distinct groups with some overlap between
them - especially as far as basic equipment is concerned.

Waterways World, Canals & Rivers (recent re-jigged title) and Canal Boat &
Inland Waterways all pretty much cover the inland sector, although Canals &
Rivers sometimes appear to have more expertise in wide beam GRP boats rather
than narrow beam steel ones.

The estuary and offshore market is covered by rather more magazines. Motor
Boat & Yachting, Power Boat, and Motor Boat come to mind.

The later group seem to have more affiliations with very large publishers,
whilst the inland sector seem to belong to smaller more specialist
publishing groups.

Also note that the inland market has a degree of crossover with the caravan
sector as far as interior fitments are concerned and may be rather more
price sensitive than the estuary and offshore sectors.

Although I am a regular contributor to one of the inland magazines I will be
happy to give a more detailed opinion about the strengths of each
publication.

Over and above what I have said organisations like British Waterways, The
Environment Agency, and the Inland Waterways Association all publish house
"magazines" that are distributed to boaters and take advertising.

There are also at least two "newspaper style" freesheets published that
distribute to their respective markets.

Email off group if I can be of any more help.

Hello Erin; I worked in Y-Marina in Coos Bay for about 6 years doing
rig-outs, engine repairs and a short period in sales. I also fished
inshore and offshore. I now live in northern England on the river Tweed
(Coastal) The guys on here will give you all you need but some of the
information may need a bit of rectification to clarify it's true
meaning. There is a great deal of difference to comprehend. Shout if
you need a bit of help. pinehouseuk.DeleteThis@aol.com

One minor point there are 3 countries to themainland Britain ...

England, Wales & Scotland .... why limit your market to just England.

There is also of course Northern Ireland as part of the UK, but that is
on a separte piece of land attached to another country.
