I am planning a holiday in Kauai and lots of people recommend a 16-mile sea
kayak trip along the Na Pali coast.

It seems that most companies offer guided tours which seems fair enough from
a safety perspective.

However I struggle with the 2-person sit-on-tops that only seem to be on
offer, they may be safe for novices but to me frankly these boats look like
'plastic pigs', give me a traditional sea kayak any time.

Can anyone recommend an outfitter on Kauai whose rental fleet includes
'normal' sea kayaks?

Consider that both the air and water in Hawaiian waters are pretty warm - *very*
warm maybe if you're coming from someplace cold. What you lose in
maneuverability/responsiveness on the sit-on-top might be compensated for by the
comfort of being more-or-less wet most of the time and being able to flop into
the water if you get too hot.

Many parts of the Na Pali coastline have very fast currents running
parallel to the coastline. Sitting on a log with a beer in each hand
will move you at 3 knots in some places. It's pretty common to have a
10 to 20 kn breeze to help you along. A trad kayak would be pretty hot
with a skirt in the blazing sun. Most locals use SOTs with a fast hull
design for fishing. Unfortunately, you'll probably get a Scrambler
which is slower than a log.

Pierre, you're probably right. Have you thought about bring your own
folder along? That's the ultimate choice. There used to be a company
that would fedex you a rental folder at your paddling destination. I
can't find a link to them now.

Have fun.
