There seem to be plenty of nice boats out there, often let down by an
antique engine, smelly and fumey, leaky and expensive to run.

We currently have friends with a Viking 26 (approx 3ton)narrow beam,
running a 25hp outboard. Cheap, clean and economical. Given the speeds
on inland waterways, it's more than enough to push it along nicely,
and quietly. I reckon usual cruising speeds run at around 1/3 throttle
or less.

How would this translate into converting a cruiser up to 32 foot, say
a Viking, seamaster, ocean wide beam, etc ripping the inboard out and
replacing with an outboard?

What does the panel think?

TIA.

Its the stopping and low speed manoeuvring that would concern me.

Over and above that I think you ought to check the availability of petrol on
the inland waterways unless you like walking long distances with petrol
cans.

If the boat already has a diesel changing it to petrol brings in a host of
BSS requirements, so look on their site - link form bottom of mine.
