Archived from groups: can>rec>boating (more info?)

Hello,

Time to lean heavily on what always seems to be a good source of knowledge:

Hopefully someone here has had experience with the pitfalls/gotchas involved
in importing a boat into Canada from the US.

Any help would be appreciated, along with any pointers toward a decent
transport outfit that doesn't want the earth to move it from one coast to
the other.

Anyone have anything to share? I'm new to this, and really don't want to
fall into the traps others have been through!

Thanks much,

I bought a boat in Mt. Clemens, Michigan this spring, had it trucked
to PEI.
Sealand marine, out of Chester NS moved it, 30' Morgan.
$ 4400 Can, including all permits, etc.
All I provided was a bill of sale, ownership signed over to the
broker, copy of the appraisal.
Broker charged $ 75 + GST (of the boat)

no problems at all, just not cheap.

Thanks for this info.

So it's necessary to have a broker involved for the basic transaction? and
to actually bring the boat 'in'?
I'm dealing with an individual owner, do I still need to hire a broker to
make the transaction stick?

So, even before one actually imports/changes registration, the GST has to be
paid? .... before the duty?

I'm a little confused as to the actual process I guess, can you elaborate a
little for me?

Appreciated!

Do you have the dimensions of the boat?, Length Width and Height and weight.
I can tell you if it can be trucked cheap into Canada (on a float or flat
bed trailer) instead of a boat carrier (they will have to charge you 2 way
transportation).
As far as the brokerage goes its easy and inexpensive, it takes about 15
minutes to get set up, I wouldn't worry about that much.
Here is a list of just few custom brokers houses in Fort Erie, ON. Post the
size of your boat and I tell you if I can help or not.

Bought a MacGregor 26 last August and towed it myself from Myrtle Beach to
Oshawa.
No broker involved.
Previous owner had titles that were transferred over similiar to a car
transaction.

No tax added during the sale in South Carolina. At Canadian border,
customs collected PST and GST ... Hefty visa bill that month!
MacGregor is American made boat so no duty.

Finally, at home I had to register trailer and have it inspected by the
FEDs!! very strange since all automotive is provincial.
New boat registration was done at a local transport Canada office.

Here's the extent of my research

Excellent link on this site

Buying a Used Sailboat- the Transaction.

Don't forget to thank the authors!

Good luck

I'm interested in having a .........34' sailboat, 10' beam & height,
24000 lb displacement.........trucked from North Carolina to Nova Scotia.

Can this be done on a flatbed if cradled and strapped ?

What price ?

Thank you.
