As Paul Harvey says..."and now, for the rest of the story":
Other numbers suggested a mild improvement in the jobs market. The number of
workers drawing unemployment benefits for more than a week fell by 23,000 to
a 2.5-year low of not quite 3,100,000.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Hey, stupid...it's the economy... |

Yeah, the dumphead in the White House didn't bother to push for an
extension of unemployment benefits.

With the price of fuel, there will have to be car pools to the polls.

$1.65 today for regular. Thanks, Dubya.

You are obviously quoting fuel prices for you car,
and not your boat, at about $1.95/gal.,
or your aircraft (100LL), at about $3.45/gal.
If you *really* want to quote some meaningful statistics, quote the
price of building materials which have absolutely skyrocketed....
since shipments to Iraq have taken precedence (at American taxpayer
expense) to American usage (at American taxpayer expense).

Are you kidding? You know that they know without low fuel prices the US=20
doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of an economic recovery.
If the Saudis help us get rid of Dubya by keeping fuel prices high while=20
preventing economic recovery, I'd be happy to pay $2.50 a gallon for my=20
twin 454 gas hogs all summer long.
I'd consider it a good investment in my total cost of life.

It could be worse. If we had elected Captain Planet (Al Gore), he
would have implemented carbon taxes to save us from the global warming
myth and we'd be paying over $3.00/gallon now.

Indeed, $1.65 for regular for the truck, $1.99 for boat gas, the last
time I checked, and $1.45 for marine diesel at the commercial marina in
Dundalk.

Well, guys, our armed forces have a few openings. I'd think a good many of our
unemployed could get employed right quick if they want. Of course, as always,
a HS diploma is always useful. Lack of an arrest record helps, too. Oops, how
about that constant random drug testing? The pay is not exactly handsome but
there is a hell of a good benefit package.
The downside is the danger, of course. Constant difficult training is not
always fun. The family separation problems is very difficult to cope with.
But, it's a great life for those who want to serve and do meaningful things and
have one hell of a good time earning decent pay after a couple of years.

Indeed, the military is the employer of last resort...but you have to
want to go out and do really stupid things if ordered to do so by an
incompetent like Dubya. And you might get killed in the process.
> But, it's a great life for those who want to serve and do meaningful things
You might end up doing something meaningful. Maybe.

Nice response. Problem is, about 90% of the guys I work with are
ex-military... retired.... from 45 years old to about 84 years old.
From the amount and scope of bitching I listen to.... they don't
agree with anything you have said.... except the fun thing... you
know, what happens overseas stays overseas?
They'd get one hell of a laugh about the great pay and bennies
thing.... I'm not going to tell them, though. They bitch enough as
it is....

Geez...it was a $1.62 in June, 2000. You're gonna whine about a three cent

Not to mention letting the US lumber lobby push Canada around for trying to
