Hello fellow boaters,
My engine, nearing 1 year old, serviced by our marina this past winter,
winterized, storage etc. is pillowing large plumes of blue smoke, (oil I
guess) when I start it up each weekend.
Mostly, the engine sits in the boat house all week, but on the first start,
it really puffs up a storm, so much so, it fills the boat house with smoke.
Reving the engine get me warmed up and ready to go, but the idle is rough,
it even seems if its missing a spark, it kind of sputters along, until it
really gets warm, then the blue returns to what I think as normal output (as
compared to other boats/engins with o/b's).
Ocassionally, but getting worse, after a warm up period (2-3 minutes)
throttling up from idle, to get underway, the engine stalls.
I start again, no problems starting, put it into gear, give it gas, and it
stalls again.
We do this 3 or 4 times, before it finally gets going.
Does anyone have a similar complaint abot the blue plumes?
Can anyone make a suggestion of what I need to check out first, before I
drag the boat out, and drive it over to the shop (marina)??
Thanks in advance,

| So many things could be wrong, and yet often its as simple as bad gas. Could
be reeds (if 2 stroke) could be rings. Could be improper fuel oil ratio (2
stroke) .....my gut would tell me to do a compression check cold and hot and
compare, should be no noticeable difference in ranges then go from there.

Bryan, thanks for the reply, actually I have been at the cottage boating for
the past week or so, and I've seen you post today.
The problem, it turns out, the gas/oil injector module, one complete unit,
was at fault, and was flooding the engine with oil, but, starving it of gas,
so it would stall out.
The marina changed the unit, it now starts and runs fine when its warm, but,
its still rough when its cold.

I've heard this several times, and I don't think it's right. If it's a
2-stroke, how would bad rings make it smoke? Unlike a 4-stroke, the
mixture in the crankcase is exactly the same as in the combustion chamber.
In fact, it gets sucked into the combustion chamber in the next stroke. So
how could it make the engine smoke?
As the subsequent post showed, a 2-stroke smokes because of too much oil
in the "mixture" - either in the tank or an improperly-adjusted oil
injection.

Not saying it is the case here because I never got the original thread, but
I agree with Lloyd, 2 strokes smoke, it is in the design. If they truly
smoke too much and they are not injected engines then it falls back to..
1- too rich at idle, but that usually causes stalling
2- cheap 2 stroke oil
3- not 2 stroke oil (trust me, have seen people use 10-30 oil as a mix)
4- too much oil in the mix, almost every motor out there right back to the
50's is happy with 50-1 if using quality oil.
Tired rings in a 2 stroke causes large power losses, hard starting, poor
idle and so on, doesn't cause it to 'burn excessive oil' like a 4 stroke
would.
