Hi,

Trying to set up a Grand Canyon trip.

Would like to do an oars type boat trip, but at my age I don't think I
could ever handle the climb-out at Phantom Ranch. 7 or 8 days is my
trip limit.

How do other folks handle the climb out ?
They must have bodies strewn all over the place !

Any options on this I'm missing ?
chopper, etc., out ?

Hi Bob,

You can easily do an oars trip and ride a mule out at Phantom Ranch in 8
days. And IMHO, you also get the prettiest part of the canyon-- at least
the most photogenic. It's all beautiful, of course.

IIRC, on most rowing trips it is 6-7 days to Phantom Ranch.

No choppers below the rim except in an emergency in that part of the canyon,
though there is one outfit that choppers its passengers out below Lava.
Can't remember, but it's something like the helipad's outside of the Park.

In 8 days, you can do a whole motorized tour.

Check out the photos on my webpage for a virtual tour. Scroll down to the
GC links.

Best,

Chuck

One possibility is to arrange a mule to be there for a ride out. The South
Rim has contacts.

Due to an injury on a canyon trip, I climbed out at Phantom a few years
ago. I'm not much of hiker (although in pretty good shape for a
53-year-old at the time), but it's not hard, especially if you do it
off-summer. I think it took me 5 hours - not fast, but not slow either.
I was carrying about 30 lbs of gear too. Start early and you'll have
10 hours to recreate and tour on your way up. The Kaibab trail (the one
I took out) is shorter but steeper than Angel. The last 2 miles are a
grunt on both trails, as I remember.

If your schedule requires you to camp overnight at Phantom, you will
need a reservation.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Mules are cheap; $100 one way in 2000, IIRC. And they usually have extras
for tourons who hike down and then have a few too many buds at the ranch and
can't make it back out with their own legs.
