Would those foam car toppers stop a kayak from sliding from
side-to-side (within the ties) when the car turns? Apparently my rack
is slippery in the rain with a kayak that has recently been 303ed....

Those foam blocks that have grooves for the rack on one side and are
slightly V shaped on the other side are all I've ever used. I've never had a
boat slip. I used a band saw and cut the top of the blocks to match the
contour of the hull to reduce deformation when the straps are pulled snug.
Never saw the need to get saddles or rollers. a 60lb boat ain't nothin' to
lift and I always load from the side. Plus, all that "business" attached to
the rack would get in the way when carrying other things like plywood and
such.

"Foam car toppers" meaning those big chunks of foam that are
supposed to substitute for a rack? Waste of money, if you've got a
rack already. Try pipe insulation, it'll cost you about a buck.

Well, the foam ones you put on the existing rack, anyway. I think
they're $25 or $30. Didn't think of pipe insulation - might be a good
idea. Thanks!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I found the pipe insulation to be worthless. They compress down to nothing with
a weight on it. I think those foam pads made to fit on a rack are better. The
material has a lot more density.

I originally taped some carpet on my rack and that worked, but my wife
complained that it looked tacky so now, I have saddles.

I agree. The pipe insulation us so so if you are using stackers but do
nothing to stabalize the boat if you are strapping it down horizontally on
it's hull or deck. The foam pads can be recut to match your hull shape
which reduces hull distortion considerably. To clarify, I'm talking about
using the foam blocks on a factory or aftermarket rack. Not strapped to the
roof as a substitute for a rack.

Well, first, I'll say I haven't tried this idea, so your milage may vary...
(I have saddles), but, if I was going to try again on a new rack, I think
i'd try 2 pairs of u-bolts from Home Depot, Menards, Ace or <insert hardware
store name here> over a small chunk of pipe insulation (avoid scratching
rack and car).

If you can put one on each side of the boat and tighten that so they don't
move, then you have something to keep the boat from slipping side to side so
long as the boat is tight to the rack.

But the object is to keep the boat from sliding, not to provide it
with a comfy snuggly doggie bed which it doesn't need. Anything
that'll make some friction ought to work. Hell, vinyl tape would
probably work.

Well, for plastic and Whitewater boats I agree with you Mary, but for
lightweight Kevlar/Glass touring beds, Yakima style bars end up putting a
lot of force on a small area that can lead to cracks. Saddles and padding
help distribute the force.

I guess the pipe insulation, or tape would keep the kayak from slipping
sideways. Aren't you concerned about distortion from sliding the kayak and
tightening it down on steel roof rack bars?

I love that idea. Will look into it for my recreational kayak.
