Greet's
I bought a 16' trihull, need to replace all wood (floor and
transom). This boat has a carpeted floor over flake board. Would like
to replace this with 5/4 decking instead of plywood or flakeboard. I
have never replace a floor in a boat and this is the first one I have
owned,, Would like any suggestions or thoughts on this.. This boat
will be used mostly for crabbing and some fishing maybe 5 to 10 days a
year, maybe 4 or 5 pleasure outings a year. Boat is a bow rider.

Especially considering the small size (and therefore the small amount of
mat'l needed), I would suggest you consider some of the recycled plastic
lumber out there and even add additional stringers to support it if
necessary. You are going to be barefooted and the crabs and fish will
invariably come in contact with the floor. I cringe when I see treated
lumber in boats like this. The recycled stuff will cost a bit more (but
because it is small, the total cost won't be much either way) but it
will never rot and it won't add unhealthy "spices" (cyanide, arsenic,
etc.) to your catch.

I might speculate that fir plywood would be a better choice as the plywood
could play a part in re enforcing the hull itself. Your idea seems logical
considering the planned use however I might seal over the hull with epoxy or
some resin prior to installing the decking. First I would remove the
existing flakeboard then assess your next move. Make sure you clean things
well so the sealer adheres properly.

Thanks, I am going to take the motor off Friday and then remove the
existing rotted transom and clean and prep the hull. Then I will rip
out the floor, I may put plywood then decking or Trek decking down
considering your post and the other follow up message.. Thanks for
your input..

I forgot all about the extra's that come with treated lumber.. I'll
look and see when I take out the floor if I could replace it with TREK
decking, They have it at Home Depot here.. Thanks for the idea on the
composite decking.. The thought didn't even cross my mind.. The carpet
like it has now just seems like a factory for unhealthy conditions for
fishing and crabbing.. Plus I think decking will add to the boat..

Thanks again
