Well, since I'm having very little luck finding inexpensive yards on the FTL
side (though I did pick up the yellow pages from every county between Miami
and Melbourne and will be calling to confirm my ad-hoc findings from this
and other sources), I'm now looking on the other side.

This is enhanced in two parts: The first is that I've had a craftsman
recommended by a 20+ year user, and he's recently moved from FTL to STP.
So, the one I'd likely use is on the west coast, anyway. The second is that
during my recent trip (same as retrieving yellow pages) I picked up an
ad-type mag in Sailorman, and found a few west coast listings which were on
the order of half to a quarter of the apparent 'bargain price' of the FTL
area yards, and *those* prices were on the order of half the non-bargain
prices.

So, we're thinking in terms of doing a shakedown cruise from the presumed
point of sale (if the one we're trying on doesn't succeed, there's another
over there - and our third choice is in STP!) over to somewhere on the west
coast.

Do any of you have experience or knowledge of DIY yards anywhere on the FL
west coast between the Keys and Clearwater, but preferably not further south
than, say, Fort Meyers?

Actually, we're rather enthused about the thought of that sail, so unless I
find something to equal (i.e. $3-6 a foot per month) on the east side, we'll
come over to the Gulf. The only wrinkle which makes it a bit nervous-making
is the thought that when we go, and have a total of 20 days to get out of
FL, since we'll be headed east, it might be dicey on the time to splash it
given the weather windows for the Bahamas crossing.

Thanks for any help!

quite alone on a great, wide sea, it is apt to occur to you that in the
general scheme of things you are merely an insignificant speck on the
surface of the ocean; and are not nearly so important or as self-sufficient
as you thought you were. Which is an exceedingly wholesome thought, and one
that may effect a permanent change in your deportment that will be greatly

I'm not sure just what is you are looking for. A reasonable DIY yard
on Florida's east coast? I accidentally pulled into one in Ft. Pierce
quite recently. The people who ran it seemed nice enough but I
couldn't get out of there fast enough. I never saw a more motley
group of boat owners (looked like the Manson gang had taken up
boating) in my many years of sailing. Also, there used to be a DIY
yard on what is known as the 18-mile stretch between Florida City and
Key Largo but I don't know if it is still in operation. Try the
Homestead and Key Largo yellow pages. Good luck.

Skip,

Would Port Canaveral by too far north for you? We have a pretty good yard up
here "Cape Marina" who'se prices I'm sure are lower than Lauderdale. Some
talent around too. Cape does charge vendors for working in the yard. Cape
has full painting and sandblasting services if required.

If you're interested e-mail me merlinuxo at yahoo.com and I'll call them for
current prices.

Some folks I know have used Salt Creek Boat Works, but I think the
yard was in flux at that time. I've been there, but I don't know
exactly where it was (someone else was driving), but I think in the
Tampa St. Pete area.

Thanks for the note...

We were, in fact, headed there on several advices from this and other groups
(having first determined that All American Boat Storage was just that - you
can't do *anything* on your boat, nor can any contractor, there; it's next
door, literally). A visit to the site suggested nothing alarming, other
than the boats were rafted well over half the width of the channel, waiting
for the remaining (the other was in pieces in the yard) lift.

However, we ran *hard* aground trying to get up the channel, while still in
the harbor. Many phone calls and VHF later, we determined that the most
optimistic depth at high tide to get into the tributary under the locks was
5-6. We draw over 6, and had been told by several at both yards that coming
in at high tide would be fine.

Well, it wasn't a fine, but it acted like one, on stupidity, because it cost
us many hundreds of bux to get pulled off the mud.

I can't speak to their service. However, I can definitively tell you that
you can't get there with any more than 5-6, and then, it's at high tide,
optimistically.

Lydia's still steaming, over 8 weeks later. Cheap is good, but only when
you can get to it...
