That in and of itself is fatal? I understand listing it as a
contributing factor, but listing it as the *cause* of the accident seems
rather tendentious...

This was more a case of body entrapment. PFD, helmet, and paddle jacket were
found but body not recovered after Lauren dropped over a small ledge and
dissappeared.

Perhaps it should read "Paddling alone without knowing his own limits."

Immodesty about ones skill on the river is the primary cause of any serious
accident.

A modest kayaker with 10,000 whitewater river miles under his keel under all
water conditions.
Including some that he was lucky (LUCKY!!!) to survive.

Maybe you don't have the info, but on the hypothermia cases, it would be
very interesting to know what they were wearing and maybe a rough idea of
the water temp.

Also, I heard (4th hand) that the death on Entrance on the Lower Yough was
a flush drowning. You might check that.

Thank you for all your work.

Thanks for the post. In light of the statistics I'm trading my kayak in for
an inner tube - 2 accidents compared to 9. Anybody know of a good whitewater
tube club?

In the case of the March 16 Cuyahoga Gorge accident they were not wearing
wet suits or dry suits and the water had only recently been iced over.

Pete, if you have detailed knowlege, have you sent a report to
Charlie? A previous poster nit-picked one item wherein "paddling
alone" was given as the cause, but, of course, Charlie can only
publish as "cause" the most salient of the details he is able to
gather. The more complete the reports he has to work from, the more
meaningful the conclusions that can be drawn from analysis of the AW
database.

Mr Walbridge publishes an yearly accident report with more detail.
American Whitewater has some of his info at:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/safety/#db
If you need more on a particular accident, try to contact him, he always
seems to be very helpful. and knowledgeable.

The annual report, including narrative descriptions, is published in
the AW Journal every year. Go to www.americanwhitewater.org to learn
how to join (subscription to the journal comes with membership).

Not only that, he co-wrote the best (most practical) book I've seen
on whitewater river rescue:

Charles Walbridge and Wayne Sundmacher, Whitewater Rescue Manual,
Ragged Mountain Press, Camden Maine, 1995.
