Post subject: Dinghy sailing in Alberta
Archived from groups: can>rec>boating (more info?)

Hi, new poster here so please be gentle...
I moved to Alberta from the UK recently and having sailed as a teenager many
moons ago, I'd like to get back into sailing now that I'm in a land with
warm summers.
Any advice on clubs, especially from the point of view of one who'd rather
enjoy his sailing than win races? Also, which are the popular dinghies here?
For that matter, do you actually call them dinghies on this side of the big
pond???
Thanks,
JJ

Welcome JJ
Where about in Alberta? There is the Alberta Sailing Assoc site
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.albertasailing.com" target="_blank">http://www.albertasailing.com</a>
This will give you links to the sailing clubs in Alberta. There are clubs on
all big lakes, Wabamun, Sylvan, a couple around Calgary here, and Lake
Newell.
I think the popular dinghys these days are the Byte and the 29er. I still
call them a dinghy. I have a Puffin Pacer and an Enterprise. Although I
don't race much anymore, there is lots of racing going on. I sail on the
Shuswap Lake more than anywhere else - only 6 hours from Calgary.

Thanks Raj and Dwight (who emailed).
I'm in Edmonton so there's a few lakes nearby! My last regular bit of
sailing was 12 years ago with a Laser 2 at my university club, and before
that I sailed Toppers and Wayfarers.
My next question is bound to raise a bit of debate... I'm a big chap, 6'2"
and a tad over 250lbs so the Enterprise or its modern equivalent won't suit
me. What would be a good, modern dinghy suitable for single-handing but also
good with a crew for when I find myself a nice Alberta lass? A good turn of
speed but plenty of all-day comfort would be good. Same goes for the dinghy.

You might try the Foothills Association of Cruiser Sailors
(http://www.facscalgary.org/) for non-racers. The other clubs focus
somewhat on racing, but emphasize fun.

In Calgary at Glenmore Sailing Club
(http://www.glenmoresailingclub.com/)

Laser
Wayfarer
Fireball

San Juan 21 (keelboat)
SR 21
Santana 23

Wednesday night racing followed by beer and burgers

Also Thursday night racing

JJ
You may want to look at Flying Juniors, Flying Scotts maybe a CL16. Have a
look at this site.

The CL 16 (similar to Wayfarer) might be a good choice. The Cl 14 could be
a bit small. I had one but sold it last year to buy a Sandpiper 565, which
is the Canadian version of your Sailfish.
