I was looking at a used kayak yesterday and it had a shallow dent in the
bottom. My guess is it got hot and there was something "stored" on top of
it. Are these easy to get out. I was thinking a heat gun to warm the dent
up and then push it out or even filling with hot (tap) water to get it warm
and more pliable and then weighting it down until it cools.

The procedure you describe is generally reccommended for plastic
kayaks. Just do it gently and be sure you don't get it hotter than you
can touch.

I succeeded in getting a deformation out of a sea kayak by using my
daughter's hair dryer and my hands. This was probably slower than your
tools, but it did work.

And....if using a heat gun, be very very careful, keep it going back and
forth not allowing it to concentrate on any one area, feel for the heat
spread as previous poster mentioned. I have seen pics posted before of major
boo boos using heat devices, the plastic can look good and in a split
second, you have a hole burned through. Another easy way is to set it out in
the sun, dent up and see how much "memory" the plactic has left in it,

I've got no suggestions on how to "fix" just a word on what you're
probably looking at - if it's under the seat of the kayak, it's called
"oilcanning" and just occurs naturally after extended use. Most
serious kayakers will no longer use their boats after it starts
oilcanning, and then sell it.

Ahhhhh yes, good point Moth! If it is under the seat, a piece of mim cell
foam placed there between hull and seat bottom can "push" it out smooth
again.

Greetings,

One possibility might be to do what the manual for my Heritage
kayak says: place a black plastic garbage bag on top of the area
dented and put it (and the kayak) in direct sunlight. Should be a
nice, safe, gentle way of heating the area and raising the dent
back to the original hull shape.

Good luck...
