I'm having a problem with the drain-plug on my Max. I have a new plug
for generic Dagger but it does not match the old one or even come
close, and no, it does not appear that the threads were stripped. The
new dagger plug cannot be tightened all the way down with out jumping
off the thread.

The existing plug tightens down a nice as you'd like and has "Beckman"
in raised letters on it. I can live with the old plug (why I'm
replacing plugs drags my air-head teenage daughter into the picture
and things get strange), I'd just like to know what I need if I ever
really need a plug.

Dagger and Perception changed the way the do drain plugs recently. The old
model was to attach a threaded flange onto the boat and thread the plug into
that. The new method is to mold the accepting threads right into a hole in
the hull. Perhaps in making the change, they also changed the pitch or
depth of the threads slightly. Is is possible your replacement plug is one
kind and the boat is another?

I wonder what would happen if you tried to double up the washers on the
plug? I picturing the plug and think it's possible that the threads run out
before meeting the head of the plug.

Just a thought.

Actually, on some perception boats, there IS no thread. What they do
is have the threads on the plug be large enough that they engage the
moulded deck directly... no tapping or thread moulding required.

I know this because I had a Method Air where the factory drain plug
would no longer fit (it wasn't very usable) and, as it was new, I
bitched. What they did was plug the hole with poly (a weld), and then
drill a new hole offset slightly.

I suppose another solution that would be easy to do yourself would be to go
get an after market drain plug that requires a flange to be installed and
then just install it over the old drain plug hole. (may require enlarging of
the existing drain plug hole)

I seem to have one of the older boats then, because it has the
separate raised and riveted flange. The threading is much different
than the new plugs. I'll just have to make sure I don't lose that
plug. Thanks all.

You could just make a "keeper" for it. Use a short length of cord
knotted to the stern grabloop and the drain plug (should have a hole
in the part you grip to twist it) - add a fishing swivel to relieve
the twists if you want to get fancy.
