Hello i'm back from hibernation !

When a propeller shaft is slightly loose within the custless bearing - when
i say sligthly it is very very slightly... is the installation prone to
vibration or can it be used ? In other words, when does a cutless bearing
needs replacement ?

Cheers

André

At the beginning of last season we had the shaft out for another reason. As
a test we slipped a new cutlass bearing onto the shaft only to find it was
very slightly loose as you described. As the existing one on the boat was
just the same fit we decided to leave the old one in place. No problems
with vibration, used it that way all season and as there doesn't seem to be
any further wear will use it that way this season. YMMV.

Hi Ken,

I've read somewhere on the web that the cutlass bearing should not have more
than 3/16 inches of loose. Mine has about .010 inches so i'm ok.

Thanks very much for your input.

André

Andre,

When your cutlass bearing has 1/8 inch of play, it's time to replace.
