I've only seen two products designed to help theft-prevent your kayak
when it's atop your vehicle: one you use like a regular strap but it
has a three-digit combination lock and one that lassos around the ends
of the kayak and slips under the roof rack rails to meet in the middle
where you lock it with a key lock. I don't really like the idea of a
combination lock (where's the peace of mind in that?). Has anybody
used either of these products or know of any others?

E-mail if possible.

Aircraft cable used as a dog run. Plastic coated stainless steal cable
with loops on both ends. Slip one end under your seat pass the other
end through the loop and around your bars and lock it tight with a
padlock. When you park undo it and pull one end of the cable into your
car and use the lock to bind it to your drivers seat.
You won't want the cable in your car while driving and the cable can
be taken with the boat and rack when parked.
Of course we have never had a kayak succesfully stolen in
Newfoundland. An island with three ways off with a kayak and one goes
to Labrador.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Dear RW, I made the lasso type kayak lock out of plastic coated
aircraft cable available at most home stores. I made a small loop at
one end of the cable, clamping it with a hammer down type cable clamp,
put it aroung the kayak and roof rack to measure for length then made a
loop for the lock shackel at the other end. I repeated the process at
the other end of the kayak, bought a rubber coated keyed master lock to
lock the cables together. It works geat for providing some peice of
mind in hotel parking lots etc. I do realize that it will make most
thieves think twice because of the extra hassle involved in stealimg my
kayaks but won't stop the determined thief. Oh one last thing, I put
heat shrink tube around the cable clamp so I have no exposed metal to
mar the top of my car

OK, here are some things that I've done, although I don't lock my boat
on very often.

1) There was a product called a "YakBar", kind of like a "Club", in
that it was an expanding bar with a "Y" section on each end. Fit into
the cockpit and locked, it provided a place for a cable to be attached
to a boat.

2) What I do now is use a cable lock, and run the cable in between the
seat and the hull, and then lock it to the rack. This is "good
enough", because you can't keep someone from stealing the boat if they
really want to steal it... it's too easy just to tear the rack off of
the car. To get the boat off, they would either have to do that, or
use tools and remove the seat from the boat.

I just use plastified steel cables with loops, which go through the grab
loops (and nowadays, the steel bars on the deck) and add a padlock
through the loops. Works for me.

I use a cable bike lock, around the rack.

How do you fix the lock with the boat?

Around the seat, around the rack. I'd only put it on when you park
though. I think the cable dancing in the wind could do minor damage to
the car paint and the boat. Or is there a solution to this?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I use a bike lock cable also. It has memory and wants to recoil
whenever it is stretched out. It does not flop or dance.

Take a look at kayaklock.com. I tried the old style (not the new one designed
to replace tie-downs) and liked the design as long as you get it to fit your
boat correctly.

There are similiar designs for sale on ebay all the time.
