Post subject: Canoe Acadia bays?
Archived from groups: rec>boats>paddle (more info?)

Hello,

I am new to this group, but I have been canoeing for the past 15+
years (lakes and slow rivers, nothing fast). My family and I are
going to Acadia this Aug. From the map of Mt. Desert Island, it looks
like there are plenty of protected bays that one might be able to
paddle in a canoe. Is this a bad idea? I was in Acadia once before,
but I wasn't paying attention to the wave height, wind, water temp.,
etc. Would it be stupid for us (me, wife, two daughters) to go
canoeing around these bays?

I have a lake canoe that is 15+ years old. It was purchased in the
Adirondacks. It is a fiberglass, 16', and weighs about 80 pounds. It
is exceedingly stable and I have been out in some bad weather. But
obviously ocean tides and wind can be stronger than the weather I am
used to in North American lakes and reservoirs.

Thanks for your time. Any thoughts and suggestions will be welcome.

Brian

Brian-

There are plenty of beautiful lakes in Acadia to delight even those who
dislike still water; however, we have canoed out of Seal Cove Harbor and
also out of Mansell's Inlet(?) and had a good and eventless time! We
did have to fight the ocean surf to get a good look at a gorgeous
lighthouse.

I'm not sure I'd want to put 4 in one canoe to do this - but, nothing
ventured, nothing gained (or lost......)

The lakes throughout Acadia are truly beatiful and can feel like the
ocean if the wind is up. Try canoeing on Jordan Pond and then saunter
up to Jordan Pond House for warm scrumptious popovers and lemonade on
the Great Lawn! Mmmmmmm, just thinking about it makes me want to return.

Try Long Lake on the "quiet side", Southwest Harbor, for a long and
satisfying paddle.

Have fun!
